Matthew Wedman returns to Seattle Thunderbirds
After a summer of training with the Florida Panthers and Springfield Thunderbirds, the Panthers’ affiliate team, Matthew Wedman has returned to the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds.
In June, the 20-year-old was selected in the seventh round, 199th overall by the Panthers at the 2019 NHL Draft. Now as he returns to the Thunderbirds, he will be a key piece to the U.S. Division teams’ success both on and off the ice.
Last season, Wedman was the Thunderbirds’ leading scorer with 77 points (40G-37A) in 66 games. He was the first player to hit 40 goals since Prab Rai had 41 goals in the 2009-10 season. In recognition of his achievement across the league, the 6-foot-3, 196-pound Edmonton, Alta. native was named to the Western Conference Second All-Star team last season.
In 255 career games with the Thunderbirds, Wedman totaled 157 points (67G-90A). In 43 career playoff games, he has recorded 10 points (3G-7A). Wedman was originally selected by Seattle in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.
