TUESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
GIANTS DOUBLE UP T-BIRDS – Brendan Gallagher scored three goals and added an assist for a four-point outing to lead the visiting Vancouver Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday.
Marek Tvrdon notched a goal and two assists for the Giants (9-7-0-1), who outshot the Thunderbirds 50-23 in the contest as they post their fifth win in their last six games. Adam Morrison made 21 saves to claim his seventh win of the season.
Justin Hickman and Kyle Verdino scored for the Thunderbirds (5-7-0-0), who suffer their second straight setback but remain in fourth place in the U.S. Division. Calvin Pickard turned aside 46 of 49 shots in a losing cause.
WHEAT KINGS 7, BRONCOS 3
Michael Ferland scored three goals and chipped in an assist to pace the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings to a 7-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday.
Brodie Melnychuk – with his first of the season – Darian Dziurzynski, Bruno Mraz and Mark Stone also scored for the Wheat Kings (10-5-0-0), who broke open a 2-2 tied midway through the second period with five straight goals. Corbin Boes made 25 saves in the win.
Coda Gordon and Reece Scarlett each notched a goal and an assist while Graham Black also counted for the Broncos (6-9-2-0), who drop their second straight decision. Jon Groenheyde made 27 saves in the defeat.
PATS 2, BLADES 1
Chandler Stephenson scored his fourth goal in his last three games to help the Regina Pats to a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Saskatoon Blades on Tuesday.
Dominik Volek also scored for the Pats (11-6-0-0), who retain a one-point lead for first place in the East Division. Matt Hewitt made 26 saves to improve his record to 11-3 on the season.
Duncan Siemens scored the only goal for the Blades (9-5-0-1), who were held scoreless on three power play chances in the defeat. Andrey Makarov made 24 saves in a losing cause.
HITMEN 5, RAIDERS 2
Jimmy Bubnick scored a hat trick to lead the visiting Calgary Hitmen to a 5-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday.
Cody Sylvester notched a goal and an assist while Calder Brooks scored his first WHL marker for the Hitmen (6-6-0-1), who claim their second straight win and improve to 3-0 on the road versus East Division Clubs. Chris Driedger made 28 saves to record the victory.
Justin Maylan and Kellan Tochkin each notched a goal and an assist for the Raiders (4-13-1-1), who saw a 2-1 lead evaporate in the third period as they drop their sixth straight decision. Eric Williams and cole Holowenko combined for 22 saves in the loss.
TIGERS 10, SILVERTIPS 2
Hunter Shinkaruk scored three goals and added three assists for a six-point outing as the Medicine Hat Tigers blasted the visiting Everett Silvertips 10-2 on Tuesday.
Emerson Etem tallied a goal and four assists and Dylan Bredo picked up a goal and three assists for the Tigers (12-5-0-0), who post their WHL-leading 12th win of the season, while Cole Grbavac, James Bettauer, Boston Leier and Patrik Parkkonen also scored. Tyler Bunz made 23 saves in the win.
Former Tiger Ryan Harrison and Cody Fowlie scored for the Silvertips (4-11-0-2), who were outshot 52-25 in the loss. Kent Simpson and Austin Lotz combined for 42 saves in the loss.
