TUESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
ROYALS EDGE AMERICANS – Jamie Crooks’ eighth goal of the season 14:12 into the third period held up as the game-winner as the visiting Victoria Royals edged the Tri-City Americans 5-4 in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday night.
Kevin Sundher, Robin Soudek and Steven Hodges each tallied a goal and an assist and Kade Pilton added his third goal of the season for the Royals (8-6-0-0), who earn their second win in a row. Keith Hamilton turned aside 41 of 45 shots he faced to claim his seventh win of the season.
Marcus Messier – with his first of the season – Justin Feser, Nathan MacMaster and Malte Stromwall scored for the Americans (10-5-0-0), who trailed 2-0 and 4-2 after the first and second periods en route to their second loss on home ice this season. Eric Comrie and Ty Rimmer combined for 20 saves in the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 7, HITMEN 1
Jason Trott scored twice and picked up an assist to pace the visiting Portland Winterhawks to a 7-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen on Tuesday.
Seth Swenson, Taylor Leier, Brendan Leipsic, Brad Ross and William Wrenn also scored for the Winterhawks (7-5-1-1), who built on a 2-0 lead with five third-period goals en route to their first win on their Central Division road trip. Mac Carruth turned in a 36-save effort to earn the victory.
Victor Rask scored his seventh goal of the season for the Hitmen (4-6-0-1), who suffer their second straight setback. Chris Driedger and Brandon Glover combined for 29 saves in the loss.
GIANTS 6, COUGARS 2
Marek Tvrdon scored twice and set up another to lead the Vancouver Giants to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Tuesday.
Austin Vetterl – with a pair of goals – Brendan Gallagher and Dalton Sward also scored while Cain Franson racked up four assists for the Giants (7-6-0-1), who stretch their winning streak to three games and move to within two points of Kamloops for the B.C. Division lead. Adam Morrison made 22 saves in the victory.
Jarrett Fontaine and Campbell Elynuik scored for the Cougars (3-9-0-1), who snap their goalless drought but suffer their sixth straight defeat. Drew Owsley and Devon Fordyce combined for 23 saves in a losing cause.
