TUESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
WINTERHAWKS DOUBLE UP COUGARS – Ryan Johansen scored twice and set up another to lead the visiting Portland Winterhawks to a 6-3 win over the Prince George Cougars in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday.
Troy Rutkowski notched a goal and two assists while Brendan Leipsic, Craig Cunningham and Sven Baertschi also scored for the Winterhawks (40-16-0-3), who cruise to their third straight victory and reclaim top spot in the U.S. Division and Western Conference standings. Mac Carruth made 28 saves in 51 minutes of work to record the win while Keith Hamilton stopped four of six shots in relief.
Charles Inglis scored twice and Taylor Stefishen scored his 21st goal of the season for the Cougars (28-29-2-1), who allowed the game’s first four goals en route to their third straight setback. Ty Rimmer made 33 saves in a losing cause.
ICE 4, ROCKETS 2
James Martin broke a 2-2 tie with a power play marker 8:45 into the third period as the Kootenay Ice went on to a 4-2 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Tuesday.
Brayden McNabb – with his 17th of the season – Hayden Rintoul and Matt Fraser also scored for the Ice (39-18-1-2), who have won nine of their last 11 games and move back into a tie with Medicine Hat for third place in the Eastern Conference. Nathan Lieuwen made 24 saves to claim his 28th victory of the season.
Geordie Wudrick and Kevin Smith each notched a goal and an assist for the Rockets (33-25-0-1), who are 4-5-0-1 over their last 10 games but remain tied on points with Vancouver for top spot in the B.C. Division. Jordon Cooke turned in a 47-save performance in the loss.
SILVERTIPS 3, AMERICANS 2
Parker Stanfield’s goal on a penalty shot 15:48 into the third frame was the winner as the visiting Everett Silvertips edged the Tri-City Americans 3-2 on Tuesday.
Manraj Hayer and Josh Winquist also counted for the Silvertips (26-25-5-4), who stretch their win streak to three games and move two points ahead of the Cougars for sixth place in the Western Conference. Kent Simpson turned aside 31 of 33 shots he faced to pick up his 20th win of the season and 50th of his WHL career.
David Conrad and Zach Yuen scored for the Americans (36-18-2-2), who suffer their third consecutive loss on home ice and remain in fourth place in the Western Conference. Cam Gorchynski made 20 saves in the setback.
