THURSDAY’S WHL PRE-SEASON ROUND-UP
ICE TOP AMERICANS – Luke Philp scored the go-ahead goal with 1:48 remaining to play in regulation to lift the Kootenay Ice to a 5-4 win over the Tri-City Americans in the opening game of the Tri-City pre-season tournament on Thursday.
Sam Reinhart scored a pair of goals for the Ice, who went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Kurt Johnas and Jaedon Descheneau also scored in the win. Brett Teskey and Mackenzie Skapski combined for 25 stops in the win.
Mackenzie Royer, Drydn Dow, Mason Wilgosh and Tyson Dallman scored for the Americans. Eric Comrie stopped 25 of 30 shots he faced in a losing cause.
HITMEN 4, HURRICANES 3 S/O
Alex Gogolev, Justin Kirsch and Brady Brassart all scored in a shootout to give the Calgary Hitmen a 4-3 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes in Taber, AB, on Thursday.
Brassart, Kenton Miller and Jaynen Rissling scored in regulation for the Hitmen. Brandon Glover stopped 22 of 23 shots he faced from the 10-minute mark of the second period through overtime, and denied one of three ‘Canes’ shootout attempts to earn the win. Mike Snider made 21 saves on 23 shots over the game’s first half.
Cam Braes, Taylor Balog and Craig Leverton scored in regulation for the Hurricanes. Brandon Anderson made 41 saves in regulation play and overtime, but was beaten three times in the shootout for the win.
