TEAM WHL wins 9-2 over the Russian Selects

Saskatoon, SK – It was a night to remember for Devin Setoguchi as the 18-year-old Saskatoon Blades forward netted a hat trick in front of a home crowd to lead Team WHL to a 9-2 victory over the Russian Selects in Game Five of the 2005 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge on Wednesday night at Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

rSetoguchi, a product of Taber, AB, and a San Jose Sharks prospect, opened the scoring for Team WHL in the first period after Sergey Ogorodnikov – with the first of two on the night – gave the Russians a 1-0 lead.

rThe 8th overall pick in the 2005 NHL draft netted his second – the eventual game-winner – on an early second-period power play, and completed the hat trick two-and-a-half minutes later.

rSetoguchi’s efforts earned him Team WHL Player of the Game honors.

rKootenay’s Ryan Russell tallied a pair of goals for the WHL team, who exploded for six goals in the middle frame, while Moose Jaw’s Kenndal McArdle, Prince George’s Eric Hunter, Seattle’s Aaron Gagnon and Prince Albert’s Dane Byers rounded out the scoring for the WHL. Meanwhile, Prince George’s Nicholas Drazenovic and Seattle rearguard Scott Jackson each chipped in three assists in the victory.

rDevan Dubnyk of the Kamloops Blazers stopped 10 of 12 shots for Team WHL through the first 30 minutes while Tri-Cities netminder Carey Price stopped all seven shot he faced in the final 30 minutes.

rRussian netminder Anton Khudobin, also a member of the Saskatoon Blades, made 18 saves through nearly 40 minutes of work while Ivan Kasutin stopped 14 shots in relief.

rWith the win, the CHL improves to 5-0 versus the Russian Selects, who dropped two games to the QMJHL and also lost both contests versus the OHL. The win also improves the WHL to a perfect 5-0 record versus the Russians in the three-year history of the ADT Canada-Russia series.
