WARRIORS END BLADES’ STREAK – Tanner Eberle capped off a thrilling comeback with the overtime winner 45 seconds into extra time to lift the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Saskatoon Blades in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Brayden Point scored twice and set up two more while Justin Kirsch – with a goal and an assist – and Jordan Messier also scored for the Warriors (22-34-4-6), who went into the third period down 4-0 but rallied for five unanswered goals to claim the win. Justin Paulic made 36 saves to record the victory.
Matej Stransky scored twice while Duncan Siemens and Michael Ferland also scored for the Blades (41-21-1-3), whose third-period collapse meant an end to their remarkable 18-game winning streak. Andrey Makarov made 34 saves in a losing cause.
PATS 4, WHEAT KINGS 3 S/O
Chandler Stephenson scored the winner in a shootout to lift the Regina Pats to a 4-3 triumph over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday.
Stephenson sent the game to overtime with the tying goal with 4:48 to play in the third period while Morgan Klimchuk and Carson Samoridny also scored for the Pats (24-35-3-4), who overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period to post their third win in a row. Teagan Sacher made 28 saves through regulation play, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to earn his eighth victory of the season.
Jayce Hawryluk scored and set up another while Eric Roy and Jason Swyripa also counted for the Wheat Kings (22-38-4-3), who went 2-for-5 on the power play in the setback. Corbin Boes stopped 24 shots through regulation play, but was beaten once in the shootout to absorb the loss.
GIANTS 1, SILVERTIPS 0 O/T
Blake Orban scored the game’s only goal 1:47 into overtime to lift the Vancouver Giants to a 1-0 shutout win over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Sunday.
Payton Lee stopped all 13 shots he faced to record his first career WHL shutout for the Giants (19-46-2-0), who have won four of their last five games but have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Austin Lotz stopped 26 of 27 shots he faced in the loss for the Silvertips (23-37-2-4), who move into a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference with the point gained from the shootout loss.
BLAZERS 3, ROCKETS 0
Cole Cheveldave stopped all 25 shots fired his way to claim his fifth shutout of the season and ninth of his WHL career as the Kamloops Blazers blanked the visiting Kelowna Rockets 3-0 on Sunday.
JC Lipon scored all three goals for the Blazers (44-18-2-3), who post their third win in a row while moving to within three points of the Rockets for first place in the B.C. Division standings.
Jordon Cooke turned aside 30 of 33 shots he faced in a losing cause for the Rockets (46-16-3-1), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end while suffering their fourth straight loss to the Blazers.
TIGERS 5, HITMEN 2
Curtis Valk picked up a goal and a pair of assists to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Sunday.
Derek Ryckman – with his first of the season – Hunter Shinkaruk, Zach Hodder and Tyler Lewington also scored for the Tigers (34-30-2-1), who led 3-0 early in the second period and never looked back as they move two points clear of Swift Current for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Marek Langhamer turned in a 39-save effort to backstop the Tigers to the victory.
Brady Brassart – with a goal and an assist – and Alex Roach scored for the Hitmen (40-20-1-4), who went 0-for-5 on the power play as they suffer their fourth straight setback. Mack Shields made 30 saves in the defeat.
