SUNDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
NOEBELS LEADS T-BIRDS PAST SILVERTIPS – Marcel Noebels scored the game’s last four goals to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 5-1 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Luke Lockhart also scored for the Thunderbirds (23-31-4-5), who were 2-for-3 on the man advantage in the contest and move to within seven points of a playoff spot with the win. Calvin Picard turned aside 39 of 40 shots he faced to claim the victory.
Ryan Murray – with his fifth of the season – had the lone marker for the Silvertips (27-27-5-4), who suffer their second loss in as many nights but remain one point up on Prince George and Kamloops for sixth place in the Western Conference. Kent Simpson made 32 saves in the loss.
GIANTS 5, AMERICANS 0
Mark Segal made 23 saves to post his fifth shutout of the season as the Vancouver Giants blanked the visiting Tri-City Americans 5-0 on Sunday.
Brendan Gallagher scored twice – his 42nd and 43rd goals of the season – and added two assists, Andrej Stastny notched a goal and two assists while James Henry and Michael Burns also scored for the Giants (33-24-1-4), who earn their second win in a row while outscoring their opponents a combined 10-1 in that span.
Chris Dreidger made 21 saves in a losing cause for the Americans (37-20-2-2), who suffer their second loss in a row and have dropped five of their last six outings.
BRUINS 4, COUGARS 3 S/O
Robin Soudek scored the lone marker in a shootout to lift the Chilliwack Bruins to a 4-3 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars on Sunday.
Soudek scored twice – his 19th and 20th of the season – in regulation play while Brandon Magee also scored for the Bruins (26-30-2-3), who move to within five points of Kamloops and Prince George for a share of seventh place in the Western Conference. Lucas Gore turned in a 45-save performance through regulation and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to claim the victory.
Brett Connolly scored twice and Taylor Thompson also counted for the Cougars (29-31-2-2), who have lost six of their last seven games. Ty Rimmer made 36 saves through three periods and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout to suffer the loss.
