SATURDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP

OIL KINGS DOWN ICE IN SEASON OPENER — The 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup champions started the defense of their WHL title with a victory on Saturday night. Andrew Koep scored twice while Cole Benson and Tyler Robertson each tallied a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oil Kings toppled the visiting Kootenay Ice 4-2.

BRONCOS 5, WARRIORS 2

Jay Merkley notched two goals to continue his hot start to the season as the visiting Swift Current Broncos swept the home and home series with a 5-2 victory against the Moose Jaw Warriors.  Jake DeBrusk also netted a goal and three points while Dakota Odgers picked up a goal and assist for the Broncos.

WHEAT KINGS 6, PATS 1

Jesse Gabrielle netted a hat trick and four other players had multiple point efforts as the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Regina Pats 6-1.  The power play was clicking for Brandon as they finished with four goals on the night. The Wheat Kings have won two straight while the Pats remain winless.

REBELS 4, HITMEN 1

Evan Polei tallied two goals and Brooks Maxwell set them both up as the visiting Red Deer Rebels prevailed over the Calgary Hitmen 4-1 on Saturday.

RAIDERS 3, BLADES 1

Dakota Conroy scored the winner on the power play as the visiting Prince Albert Raiders defeated the Saskatoon Blades 3-1.  The Raiders swept the home and home series with Saskatoon to start the season.

TIGERS 5, HURRICANES 1

Steven Owre had a two goal night while Cole Sanford chipped in with three assists to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 5-1 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes.  The Tigers have won two in a row while Lethbridge has dropped two straight decisions.

COUGARS 6, WINTERHAWKS 3

Chase Witala notched a goal and three points while Jansen Harkins and Aaron Macklin each picked up a goal and an assist as the visiting Prince George Cougars doubled up the Portland Winterhawks 6-3. Paul Bittner tallied 2 goals for the Winterhawks as they have lost two in a row.

GIANTS 3, ROYALS 1

Tyler Morrison scored the game winning goal and set up another as the Vancouver Giants opened the season with a 3-1 triumph over the visiting Victoria Royals.  Coleman Vollrath made 42 saves for the Royals in the loss as Victoria only managed to fire 12 shots the entire game.

ROCKETS 6, BLAZERS 1

Tyson Baillie and Kris Scmidli each notched a goal and three points to pace the Kelowna Rockets to a 6-1 win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers.  Four other Rockets players had multi-point nights.

SILVERTIPS 1, THUNDERBIRDS 0

Carter Hart made 26 saves to claim his first shutout of the season as the visiting Everett Silvertips blanked the Seattle Thunderbirds 1-0.  The early goal from Graham Millar stood up as the game winner as he was the only player that was able to get anything past Taran Kozun who finished with 18 saves in the losing effort.

CHIEFS 4, AMERICANS 2

Tyson Helgesen scored the winner on the power play as the visiting Spokane Chiefs doubled up the Tri-City Americans 4-2.  Brandon Carlo picked up two assists for the Americans.
