Saturday’s WHL Round-up
GIANTS END BLADES’ ROAD WIN STREAK — Evander Kane, Jonathon Blum and Craig Cunningham each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Vancouver Giants to a 5-1 win over the visiting Saskatoon Blades in Western Hockey League action on Saturday, December 6th.
Adam Basford and Lance Bouma also scored for the Giants (23-2-0-3), who earn their second straight win while improving to 12-0-0-2 on home ice this season. Tyson Sexsmith made 17 saves to record his 16th victory of the season.
Adam Chorneyko scored the only goal for the Blades (22-8-2-0), who see their 12-game road winning streak come to an end with their first road loss since a 3-2 setback in Swift Current on September 26th. Braden Holtby made 34 saves in a losing cause.
AMERICANS 4, HITMEN 1
Chet Pickard turned aside 35 of 36 shots he faced to backstop the Tri-City Americans to a 4-1 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Saturday night.
Taylor Procyshen, Kruise Reddick and Adam Hughesman each tallied a goal and two assists for the Americans (22-7-0-2), who stretch their winning streak to eight games, while Mitch Fadden also scored. The win keeps the Americans seven points ahead of Spokane for top spot in the U.S. Division.
Carson McMillan scored the only goal for the Hitmen (25-5-1-1), who suffer their first regulation loss since an October 29th setback in Saskatoon. Martin Jones made 26 saves in a losing cause.
CHIEFS 6, ICE 2
Drayson Bowman scored twice and set up three others to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 6-2 win over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
Jared Spurgeon – with a goal and an assist – Mitch Wahl, Steve Kuhn and Dustin Donaghy also scored for the Chiefs (18-9-0-3), who pick up their second victory in as many games, while Brett Bartman added two assists. Dustin Tokarski made 26 saves in the victory.
Michael Stickland and Brayden McNabb scored for the Ice (16-13-2-3), who suffer their third straight defeat despite outshooting the hosts 28-22 in the contest. Nathan Lieuwen made 16 saves in the loss.
COUGARS 4, SILVERTIPS 3 O/T
Cameron Cepek scored 3:14 into overtime to lift the Prince George Cougars to a 4-3 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Saturday.
Dallas Jackson and Marek Viedensky each tallied a goal and an assist and Dana Tyrell added his 19th goal of the season for the Cougars (12-18-0-1), who defeat the ‘Tips for the second straight night in overtime to record back-to-back wins for the first time cine early October. Kevin Armstrong made 22 saves to claim the victory.
Zack Dailey, Graham Potuer and Tyler Maxwell scored for the Silvertips (14-11-5-0), who suffer their third straight loss. Shayne Barrie made 25 saves in the loss.
THUNDERBIRDS 3, WINTER HAWKS 1
Chris Cloud’s eighth goal of the season at 14:58 of the third period stood as the winner as the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds skated to a 3-1 win over the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday.
Jonathan Parker and Greg Scott also scored for the Thunderbirds (13-14-1-2), who pick up their fourth win in their last five games. Rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard turned aside 34 of 35 shots he faced to record his ninth victory of the season.
Luke Walker scored the only goal for the Winter Hawks (8-23-0-0), who drop their second decision in the last two days. Kurtis Mucha made 31 saves in the loss.
ROCKETS 5, BRUINS 2
Jamie Benn notched a goal and an assist and Adam Borejko scored his first WHL goal to lead the Kelowna Rockets to a 5-2 win over the visiting Chilliwack Bruins on Saturday.
Lucas Bloodoff, Mitchell Callahan and Brandon McMillan also scored for the Rockets (19-11-0-0), who earn their second straight victory while improving to 4-0 versus the Bruins this season, while Cody Almond and Colin Long each chipped in two assists. Rookie goalie Adam Brown made 17 saves to earn the win.
Kevin Sundher and Brett Ward scored for the Bruins (9-18-2-2), who snap a three-game scoreless drought versus the Rockets but still suffer their seventh consecutive setback. Lucas Gore made 23 saves in the defeat.
REBELS 3, BLAZERS 2
Carter Smith’s 10th goal of the season 3:59 into the third period lifted the Red Deer Rebels to a 3-2 win over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
Brennan Wray – with a goal and an assist – and Steve Oursov also scored for the Rebels (11-17-0-5), who earn their third win in their last four games. Morgan Clark turned aside 29 of 31 shots he faced to record his fourth win of the season.
Tytler Shattock – with a goal and an assist – and C.J. Stretch scored for the Blazers (13-16-1-3), who drop their third straight decision, while Nick Ross chipped in two assists. Justin Leclerc made 25 saves in the defeat.
HURRICANES 5, OIL KINGS 3
Mitch Versteeg notched a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday.
Colton Sceviour, Cam Braes, Carter Bancks and Brent Henke also scored for the Hurricanes (17-12-0-1), who pick up their sixth win in a row, while Zach Boychuk chipped in a pair of assists. Rookie netminder Michael Tadjdeh made 35 saves to improve to 4-0 in four career appearances.
Adrian Van de Mosselaer – with a goal and an assist – Brent Raedeke and Robin Soudek scored for the Oil Kings (14-17-1-3), who drop their third decision in their last four outings. Torrie Jung made 31 saves in the loss.
RAIDERS 8, WARRIORS 3
Justin Bernhardt scored twice and added two assists and Ryan McDonald notched a goal and three assists as the Prince Albert Raiders skated to an 8-3 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday.
Ryan Harrison – with two goals – Nathan Deck, Dustin Cameron and Jordan Kochan also scored for the Raiders (14-20-1-0), who snap a nine-game losing skid with their first win since November 11th. Garrett Zemlak made 22 saves to take the win.
Joel Broda – with a pair of goals – and Ian Duval scored for the Warriors (7-21-0-1), who suffer their seventh consecutive defeat and their 11th straight road loss. Jeff Bosch and Deven Dubyk combined for 32 saves in the loss.
WHEAT KINGS 5, TIGERS 1
Scott Glennie scored two goals and chipped in two assists and Brayden Schenn notched a goal and two assists to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 5-1 win over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday.
Andrew Clark – with a goal and an assist – and Del Cowan also scored for the Wheat Kings (17-11-1-1), who win by a 5-1 score line for the second straight night after defeating the Broncos 5-1 on Friday in Swift Current. Andrew Hayes made 28 saves to earn his 11th win of the season.
Travis Dunstall scored the only goal for the Tigers (18-9-2-3), who see a modest two-game win streak halted. Ryan Holfeld made 29 saves in the defeat.
