WINTERHAWKS SHUT DOWN T-BIRDS – Mac Carruth turned aside all 25 shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season as the visiting Portland Winterhawks blanked the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-0 in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Ty Rattie tallied his 39th goal of the season while Oliver Gabriel, Marcel Noebels and Troy Rutkowski also scored for the Winterhawks (29-12-1-2), who earn their third straight victory and now sit just five points back of Tri-Cities for first place in the U.S. Division.
Calvin Pickard turned in a 48-save effort in a losing cause for the Thunderbirds (16-23-0-1), who see their losing skid hit six games.
CHIEFS 5, AMERICANS 3
Dominik Uher scored twice and set up another for a three-point effort to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-3 win over the visiting Tri-City Americans on Saturday.
Todd Fiddler, Blake Gal and Dylan Walchuk also scored for the Chiefs (22-13-3-3), who earn their fifth win over their last six games, while Brenden Kichton and Steven Kuhn each picked up two assists. Mac Engel made 31 saves in the win.
Drydn Dow, Brendan Shinnimin and Sam Grist scored for the Americans (33-9-0-0), who have lost two of their last three games and now sit just one point up on Kamloops for first place in the overall WHL standings. Ty Rimmer made 26 saves in a losing cause.
ROCKETS 4, GIANTS 3
Carter Rigby scored his 13th goal of the season 7:32 into the third period to lift the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Giants on Saturday.
Brett Bulmer, Colton Sissons and Tyson Baillie also scored for the Rockets (18-21-2-3), who went 1-for-2 on the power play in the contest. Adam Brown turned aside 36 of 39 shots he faced to claim his 14th win of the season and 99th of his WHL career.
Cain Franson, Riley Kieser and Tyler Vanscourt scored for the Giants (26-16-1-1), who suffer their second defeat in the last two nights. Jackson Whistle made 11 saves in a losing cause.
COUGARS 4, HURRICANES 2
Jesse Forsberg scored his second goal in as many nights to help lead the Prince George Cougars to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday.
Daulton Siwak, Jordan Tkatch and Jake Mykitiuk also scored for the Cougars (15-26-0-2), who earn their second victory in as many evenings over the visiting Hurricanes. Drew Owsley turned aside 39 of 41 shots to post his 90th career win.
Brady Ramsay and Jay Merkley scored for the Hurricanes (16-29-0-1), who outshot the hosts 41-27 but suffer their third consecutive loss. Damien Ketlo made 23 saves in the defeat.
BLAZERS 5, SILVERTIPS 2
Tim Bozon scored a pair of goals to lead the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-2 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Saturday.
Brandon Herrod scored his 20th goal of the season while Chase Schaber and Brock Balson also scored for the Blazers (31-10-1-2), who stretch their winning streak to six games and move to within one point of a share of first place in the overall WHL standings. Cole Cheveldave stopped 24 of 26 shots he faced in the win.
JT Barnett tallied a goal and an assist and Ryan Murray also scored for the Silvertips (8-27-1-7), who went 2-for-6 on the man advantage in the defeat. Kent Simpson made 30 saves in the loss.
TIGERS 6, WARRIORS 3
Curtis Valk and Emerson Etem each scored twice to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 6-3 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday.
Hunter Shinkaruk tallied a goal and an assist and Jayden Hart also counted for the Tigers (25-16-2-2), who broke open a 3-3 tie on Etem’s first of the night 10:48 into the third period. Tyler Bunz made 35 saves to claim his 100th career victory.
Cam Braes and Justin Kirsch each notched a goal and an assist while Kendall McFaull also scored for the Warriors (25-14-4-1), who suffer their second loss in as many nights on a Central Division road trip. Spencer Tremblay made 20 saves in the defeat.
OIL KINGS 3, ICE 2 O/T
Jordan Peddle scored his eighth goal of the season 3:06 into overtime to lift the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
Henrik Samuelsson scored his first WHL goal while Tyler Maxwell also scored for the Oil Kings (29-10-1-4), who have won six of their last nine games and remain atop the Eastern Conference standings. Laurent Brossoit made 25 saves to claim the win.
Sam Reinhart and Jagger Dirk scored for the Ice (25-13-2-3), who had won their previous two contests before Saturday’s O/T loss in Edmonton. Nathan Lieuwen turned aside 41 of 44 shots he faced in a losing cause.
ROYALS 4, WHEAT KINGS 3 S/O
Ben Walker scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift the visiting Victoria Royals to a 4-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday.
Former Wheat King Dakota Conroy, Jamie Crooks and Brandon Magee scored in regulation play for the Royals (14-25-2-3), who snap a 10-game losing skid, while former Wheat King defenseman Jordan Fransoo added an assist. Keith Hamilton turned in a 39-save effort through regulation, and was beaten just once in the shootout to earn the win.
Dominick Favreau, Mark Stone and Michael Ferland scored while former Royal Kevin Sundher drew two assists for the Wheat Kings (22-19-1-2), who drop their third straight decision. Curtis Honey turned in a 46-save effort through regulation play, but was beaten twice in the shootout to take the loss.
BLADES 8, RAIDERS 6
Lukas Sutter scored twice and set up two more to pace the Saskatoon Blades to an 8-6 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
Ryan Olsen, Brent Benson, Jake Trask, Matej Stransky and Dalton Thrower also scored for the Blades (26-17-0-1), who pick up their fourth consecutive win, while Michael Burns chipped in three assists. Alex Moodie made 40 saves to claim his sixth win of the season.
Kellan Tochkin scored twice and set up another and Josh Morrissey tallied a goal and three assists for the Raiders (15-27-1-2), who drop their third straight decision, while Anthony Bardaro, Justin Maylan and Logan McVeigh also scored. Luke Lee-Knight and Cole Holowenko combined for 28 saves in a losing effort.
BRONCOS 4, REBELS 0
Jon Groenheyde made 25 saves to record his first career WHL shutout as the Swift Current Broncos defeated the visiting Red Deer Rebels 4-0 on Saturday.
Andy Blanke, Reece Scarlett, Josh Derko and Coda Gordon scored for the Broncos (17-22-2-3), who had lost their previous two outings.
Deven Dubyk made 17 saves in a losing cause for the Rebels (19-19-1-4), who were scoreless on three power play chances in the defeat.
