GIANTS DOUBLE UP WINTERHAWKS – Brendan Gallagher scored three goals and added four assists for a seven-point outing as the Vancouver Giants doubled up the Portland Winterhawks 8-4 in Western Hockey League action on Saturday.
Nathan Burns, Brett Kulak, Wes Vannieuwenhuizen, Marek Tvrdon and Jordan Martinook also scored while James Henry chipped in four assists for the Giants (25-14-1-1), who went 3-for-5 on the power play in the contest. Adam Morrison made 40 saves to claim his 23rd win of the season.
Brendan Leipsic scored twice while Joe Morrow and Tyler Wotherspoon also scored for the Winterhawks (26-12-2-1), who see a six-game winning streak come to an end. Mac Carruth and Brendan Burke combined for 27 saves in the loss.
AMERCIANS 4, SILVERTIPS 0
Ty Rimmer made 22 saves to earn his second straight shutout and fifth shutout of the season as the visiting Tri-City Americans blanked the Everett Silvertips 4-0 on Saturday.
Malte Stromwall and Brendan Shinnimin each notched a goal and an assist while Adam Hughesman and Mason Wilgosh also scored for the Americans (32-7-0-0), who extend their franchise-record winning streak to 13 games.
Kent Simpson and Austin Lotz combined for 34 saves in a losing cause for the Silvertips (7-24-1-7), who suffer their second straight setback.
CHIEFS 4, THUNDERBIRDS 2
Mitch Holmberg scored twice to lead the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
Todd Fiddler scored and set up two more while Steve Kuhn also scored for the Chiefs (19-13-2-3), who pick up their second win in as many nights but remain in fifth place in the Western Conference. Mac Engel made 24 saves to claim the victory.
Burke Gallimore and Branden Troock scored for the Thunderbirds (16-21-0-1), who see their losing skid hit four games. Calvin Pickard made 36 saves in a losing cause.
ROCKETS 4, ROYALS 3 S/O
Zach Franko scored the winner in a shootout to lift the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 triumph over the Victoria Royals on Saturday.
Carter Rigby notched a goal and an assist while Myles Bell and Brett Bulmer also scored for the Rockets (17-19-2-3), who down the Royals for a second straight night while stretching their winning streak to three games overall. Jordon Cooke made 23 saves through regulation and overtime, and denied all three Royals’ shootout attempts to post the win.
Brandon Magee, Hayden Rintoul and Mike Forsyth scored for the Royals (13-24-2-3), who suffer their ninth straight defeat. Keith Hamilton made 32 saves in regulation and overtime, but was beaten once in the shootout to take the loss.
WHEAT KINGS 11, RAIDERS 3
Jens Meilleur, Michael Ferland and Darian Dziurzynski each scored twice to lead the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings to an 11-3 thrashing of the Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
Eric Roy – with a goal and two assists – Paul Ciarelli, Alessio Bertaggia, Dakota Conroy and Daniel Asham also scored for the Wheat Kings (22-17-1-1), who took a 5-3 lead into the third period and scored six more in final frame en route to the win. Brandon Anderson made 24 saves in the win.
Luke Mahura – with his first WHL goal – Antoine Corbin and Mike Winther scored for the Raiders (15-25-1-2), who were outshot 51-27 by the visiting Wheat Kings. Cole Holowenko and Luke Lee-Knight combined for 40 saves in the loss.
BLADES 4, PATS 3
Jake Trask scored twice and set up two more for a four-point outing to lead the Saskatoon Blades to a 4-3 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Saturday.
Darren Dietz and Dalton Thrower also scored and Michael Burns chipped in three assists for the Blades (23-17-0-1), who scored twice on five power play chances in the contest. Alex Moodie made 16 saves through the final two periods of play to post the win after replacing starter Andrey Makarov, who stopped all seven shots he faced in the opening frame.
Matt Marantz, Andrew Rieder and Jordan Weal scored for the Pats (23-16-3-1), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end and sit tied for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Matt Hewitt made 29 saves in the loss.
OIL KINGS 5, BRONCOS 3
Kristians Pelss scored and set up two more to pace the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 5-3 win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
Tyler Maxwell, Mark Pysyk, Griffin Reinhart and Curtis Lazar also scored for the Oil Kings (27-10-1-3), who earn their second straight win and remain three points clear of Moose Jaw for first place in the Eastern Conference. Tristan Jarry made 14 saves in the win.
Coda Gordon, Andy Blanke and Dalton Reum scored for the Broncos (16-21-2-3), who held a 2-0 lead early in the second period but gave up five of the next six goals in the loss. Jon Groenheyde, a former Oil King, stopped 37 of 42 shots in the loss.
WARRIORS 3, ICE 2
Tanner Eberle scored twice, including the game-winner, and set up another to lead the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-2 win over the Kootenay Ice on Saturday.
Kenton Miller scored and added an assists for the Warriors (25-12-4-1), who snap a three-game losing skid and pad their lead to five points for first place in the East Division. Luke Siemens made 35 saves to post his 21st win of the season.
Erik Benoit and Sam Reinhart scored for the Ice (23-13-1-3), who went 0-for-6 on the power play in the contest. Nathan Lieuwen made 19 saves in a losing cause.
TIGERS 3, REBELS 2 O/T
Emerson Etem scored twice, including the overtime winner, to lead the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday.
Dylan Bredo also scored for the Tigers (24-14-2-2), who tied the game on Etem’s 32nd of the season 16:15 into the third period then won it on Etem’s second of the night 2:16 into overtime. Tyler Bunz made 32 saves to claim his 99th career win.
Adam Kambeitz and Justin Weller scored shorthanded markers for the Rebels (17-18-1-3), who suffer their second straight defeat. Deven Dubyk stopped 34 of 37 shots in suffering the loss versus his former team.
BLAZERS 6, COUGARS 1
Brendan Ranford scored twice and set up two more while Bronson Maschmeyer also scored twice to lead the visiting Kamloops Blazers to a 6-1 win over the Prince George Cougars on Saturday.
Tim Bozon and Matt Needham also scored for the Blazers (28-10-1-2), who defeat the Cougars for a second straight night and stretch their win streak to three games overall. Cole Cheveldave made 15 saves to claim the win.
Martin Marincin scored the lone goal for the Cougars (13-25-0-2), who suffer their fourth straight defeat. Drew Owsley and Devon Fordyce combined for 35 saves in the loss.
