ROYALS GROUND ROCKETS IN O/T – Jesse Zgraggen scored his first goal of the season 35 seconds into overtime to lift the Victoria Royals to a 4-3 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Kevin Sundher tallied a goal and three assists while Robin Soudek and Hayden Rintoul also scored for the Royals (6-5-0-0), who sweep their two-game weekend series versus the visiting Rockets. Keith Hamilton made 30 saves to claim the win.
Shane McColgan, Tyson Baillie and Cody Chikie scored for the Rockets (3-4-1-0), who see their losing skid hit five games. Jordon Cooke made 32 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 5, GIANTS 0
Ty Rimmer stopped all 26 shots he faced to claim his second shutout and fifth win of the season as the Tri-City Americans blanked the visiting Vancouver Giants 5-0 on Saturday.
Adam Hughesman scored twice while Michal Plutnar, Jordan Messier and Malte Stromwall also scored for the Americans (7-3-0-0), who went 2-for-4 on the power play in the win.
Adam Morrison made 25 saves through 50 minutes of work to take the loss while Jackson Whistle allowed one goal over the final 10 minutes of the game for the Giants (4-5-0-1), who drop their second decision in as many nights.
CHIEFS 3, SILVERTIPS 1
Darren Kramer scored and set up another to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 3-1 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Saturday.
Mitch Holmberg and Dominik Uher also scored for the Chiefs (5-2-0-1), who overturned a 1-0 deficit with three third-period goals to post their fourth straight win. Mac Engel made 20 saves to earn his fourth victory of the season.
Cody Fowlie scored for the Silvertips (1-5-0-2), who suffer their fourth loss in a row. Kent Simpson made 35 saves in a losing cause.
THUNDERBIRDS 4, BLADES 2
Burke Gallimore and Marcel Noebels each scored twice as the Seattle Thunderbirds doubled up the visiting Saskatoon Blades 4-2 on Saturday.
Calvin Pickard turned aside 43 of 45 shots he faced to record his third victory of the season for the Thunderbirds (3-3-0-0), who stretch their winning streak to three games and climb back to the .500 mark.
Michael Burns scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season for the Blades (7-2-0-0), who suffer just their second loss of the season. Andrey Makarov stopped 22 of 25 shots in the defeat.
WINTERHAWKS 6, WHEAT KINGS 1
Sven Bartschi scored twice and set up two more to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 6-1 triumph over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday.
Chase De Leo scored his first WHL marker while Brad Ross, Ty Rattie and Joseph Morrow each notched a goal and an assist for the Winterhawks (5-4-1-0), who went 2-for-5 on the power play in the contest. Mac Carruth made 23 saves to record the win.
Michael Ferland – with his eighth goal of the season – scored the lone marker for the Wheat Kings (5-3-0-1), who fall to 1-2 through three games of their U.S. Division road tour. Liam Liston and Corbin Boes combined for 32 saves in the loss.
BLAZERS 3, COUGARS 0
Cole Cheveldave stopped all 26 shots he faced to record his third win of the season and his first career WHL shutout as the Kamloops Blazers downed the visiting Prince George Cougars 3-0 on Saturday.
Colin Smith notched a goal and an assist while Dylan Willick and Tim Bozon also scored for the Blazers (6-2-0-0), who win their second straight contest and remain tied with Victoria atop the B.C. Division standings.
Drew Owsley made 23 saves in a losing cause for the Cougars (3-6-0-1), who suffer their third consecutive setback and currently sit tied with Kelowna for fourth place in the B.C. Division.
REBELS 4, PATS 1
Matt Dumba scored his third goal of the season to help the Red Deer Rebels post a 4-1 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Saturday.
Turner Elson – with his first of the season – Tyson Ness and John Persson each scored empty-net markers for the Rebels (5-3-0-0), who win their second straight contest. Patrik Bartosak stopped 26 of 27 shots to post the victory.
Brandon Davidson scored the lone goal for the Pats (7-3-0-0), who see a two-game win streak come to an end but remain tied with Saskatoon for first place in the East Division. Adam Beukeboom stopped 29 of 31 shots in the loss.
TIGERS 5, HITMEN 0
Hunter Shinkaruk scored twice and set up another while Emerson Etem chipped in four assists to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 5-0 shutout win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Saturday.
Tyler Bunz turned aside all 36 shots he faced to post his first shutout and sixth win of the season for the Tigers (7-3-0-0), who push their winning streak to four games and claim a share of top spot in the Central Division. Jayden Hart, Matt Konan and Dylan Bredo also scored for the Tigers.
Brandon Glover allowed four goals on 11 shots over the first 24 minutes of the game to take the loss for the Hitmen (1-4-0-1), who drop their third straight decision, while Chris Driedger made 17 saves on 18 shots in relief.
BRONCOS 9, HURRICANES 3
Taylor Vause scored three goals and Reece Scarlett tallied a goal and three assists to lead the visiting Swift Current Broncos to a 9-3 thrashing of the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday.
Ryon Moser – with two goals – Coda Gordon, Brad Hoban and Colby Cave also scored for the Broncos (4-5-1-0), who allowed the first two goals in the contest but scored the next eight markers en route to the win. Austin Smith made 32 saves to claim the win.
Phil Tot, Brady Ramsay and Sam Mckechnie – with his first WHL marker – scored for the Hurricanes (2-8-0-1), who suffer their eighth consecutive loss. Damien Ketlo and Tanner Kovacs combined for 30 saves in the loss.
ICE 3, RAIDERS 1
Drew Czerwonka and Joey Leach each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Kootenay Ice to a 3-1 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
Jesse Ismond – with his fourth goal of the season – also scored for the Ice (6-2-0-2), who improve to 5-1 on home ice this season, while Max Reinhart chipped in three assists. Mackenzie Skapski stopped 28 of 29 shots in the win.
Todd Fiddler scored the only goal for the Raiders (3-7-1-1), who suffer their third straight setback. Cole Holowenko made 29 saves while absorbing the loss.
