SATURDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
WHEAT KINGS EDGE T-BIRDS – Mark Stone scored his 12th goal of the season to help the Brandon Wheat Kings claim a 3-2 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Michael Ferland tallied a goal and an assist and Brenden Walker notched his eighth goal of the campaign for the Wheat Kings (8-10-0-1), who have won two straight and four of their last six games. Liam Liston made 25 saves to record his sixth win of the season.
Jacob Doty and Luke Lockhart scored for the Thunderbirds (6-4-2-2), who went 1-for-2 on the power play in the contest. Calvin Pickard turned aside 37 of 40 shots he faced in as losing cause.
WARRIORS 5, PATS 3
Brendan Rowinski scored twice and set up another in his first game of the season to lead the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 5-3 win over the visiting Regina Pats on Saturday.
Quinton Howden picked up a goal and a pair of assists while Morgan Rielly and Antonin Honejsek also scored for the Warriors (9-8-0-1), who earn their second win in as many nights over the Pats while stretching their overall win streak to five games. Thomas Heemskerk made 18 stops in the victory.
Michael Sagen – with his first WHL tally – Myles Bell and Brandon Davidson scored for the Pats (5-10-1-1), who held a 3-0 lead by the 12-minute mark of the opening period before surrendering the next five goals. Damien Ketlo made 34 saves in a losing cause.
ICE 5, HITMEN 2
Rookie Adam Rossignol scored his first WHL goal as his Kootenay Ice skated to a 5-2 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Saturday.
Joe Antilla, Matt Fraser, Jesse Ismond and Luke Pauslen also counted for the Ice (12-4-0-2), who led 2-0 after one period and 4-1 after the second period of play as they snap a two-game losing skid. Nathan Lieuwen made 22 stops to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Kyle Schmidt – with his first WHL marker – and Justin Kirsch scored for the Hitmen (4-13-0-0), who suffer their ninth straight defeat. Michael Snider and Juraj Holly combined for 25 saves in the loss.
HURRICANES 5, BLAZERS 4
Mark Reners scored the winner and added an assist to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
Alex Kuvaev, Max Ross, Graham Hood and Mitch Maxwell also scored for the Hurricanes (8-6-0-3), who trailed 4-2 entering the third period but rallied for three goals to claim the win. Dylan Tait made 25 saves to record the victory.
Brendan Ranford scored three goals – his 15th, 16th and 17th markers of the season – and Tyler Hansen also counted for the Blazers (9-9-0-1), who allowed three goals in just over four minutes in the third period in the defeat. Cam Lanigan made 35 saves in a losing cause.
BLADES 4, TIGERS 3 O/T
Stefan Elliott potted his second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season just 36 second into overtime to lift the visiting Saskatoon Blades to a 4-3 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Jake Trask and Brent Benson also scored for the Blades (13-5-0-0), who earn their second straight victory while snapping a three-game road losing skid. Adam Morrison made 21 saves in the win.
Linden Vey – with a goal and two assists – Hunter Shinkaruk and Emerson Etem scored for the Tigers (9-5-1-0), who see a three-game winning streak come to an end. Tyler Bunz made 27 saves in the defeat.

WINTERHAWKS 4, SILVERTIPS 2
Brad Ross scored his eighth goal of the season as the Portland Winterhawks doubled up the visiting Everett Silvertips 4-2 on Saturday.
Oliver Gabriel, Sven Bartschi and Ryan Johansen also scored for the Winterhawks (14-2-0-1), who roll to their eighth straight victory and remain comfortably in first place in the Western Conference. Keith Hamilton turned in a 34-save effort to record his fifth win of the season.
Taylor Cote scored his first WHL goal and Clayton Cumiskey also scored for the Silvertips (6-5-1-3), who were scoreless on four power play chances in the contest. Kent Simpson made 30 saves in the defeat.

OIL KINGS 7, COUGARS 4
Jordan Hickmott scored two goals and added an assist to pace the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings to a 7-4 victory over the Prince George Cougars on Saturday.
T.J. Foster, Stephane Legault, Josh Lazowski and Dylan Wruck each picked up a goal and an assist while Michael St. Croix notched his ninth of the season for the Oil Kings (6-10-0-1), who rebound after Friday’s 6-3 loss to the Cougars. Jon Groenheyde made 32 saves to record his first win as a member of the Oil Kings.
Greg Fraser – with a goal and an assist – Nick Buonassisi and Brock Hirsche scored for the Cougars (10-8-1-0), who were 2-for-8 on the man advantage in the game. Ty Rimmer made 34 saves in the defeat.
CHIEFS 3, BRONCOS 1
Steve Kuhn broke a 1-1 tie with his third goal of the season 14:05 into the third period to lead the visiting Spokane Chiefs to a 3-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
Collin Valcourt and Tyler Johnson also scored for the Chiefs (8-8-1-0), who wrap up their East Division road swing with a 3-2-1 record. James Reid made 20 saves to pick up the victory.
Cody Eakin scored his 10th goal of the season for the Broncos (10-10-0-0), who suffer their third straight loss on home ice. Austin Smith turned in a valiant 47-save performance in a losing cause.
ROCKETS 9, BRUINS 3
Geordie Wudrick scored three goals and Tyson Barrie tallied a goal and three assists as the Kelowna Rockets blasted the visiting Chilliwack Bruins 9-3 on Saturday.
Shane McColgan and Mitchell Callahan each netted a goal and two assists while Spencer Main, Damon Severson and Mitchell Chapman also scored for the Rockets (8-10-0-0), who storm to their fourth straight victory. Adam Brown made 16 saves in the win.
Kevin Sundher, Brandon Manning and T.C. Cratsenberg – with his first WHL tally – scored for the Bruins (9-7-0-0), who suffer their second defeat in as many nights. Lucas Gore and Braden Gamble combined for 19 saves in a losing effort.
REBELS 5, AMERICANS 3
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice and set up another while Byron Froese tallied a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 5-3 win over the Tri-City Americans on Saturday.
Matt Dumba and Daulton Siwak also scored for the Rebels (12-6-1-0), who scored three times on seven power play opportunities in the game. Darcy Kuemper made 34 saves to backstop the Rebels to the win.
Brooks Macek, Jordan Messier and Adam Hughesman scored for the Americans (11-5-1-1), who suffer their second loss in a row. Drew Owsley made 19 saves in the defeat.
