SATURDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
ICE COOL OFF PATS – Kevin King and Steele Boomer each tallied a goal and two assists as the Kootenay Ice skated to a 7-4 win over the visiting Regina Pats in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Joe Antilla, James Martin, Matt Fraser, Jesse Ismond and Christian Magnus also scored for the Ice (5-3-0-1), who converted three of five power play chances in the contest. Rookie goaltender Brett Teskey made 19 saves to record his first WHL victory.
Carter Ashton, Thomas Frazee and Jordan Weal – with a goal and two assists – scored for the Pats (2-7-1-0), who led 4-3 in the late going of the second period but gave up four unanswered goals to suffer the loss. Matt Hewitt and Damien Ketlo combined for 25 saves.
BLADES 4, HURRICANES 0
Adam Morrison made 37 saves to record his fifth career shutout as the visiting Saskatoon Blades blanked the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0 on Saturday.
Stefan Elliott, Marek Viedensky, Brent Benson and Levi Bews scored for the Blades (8-1-0-0), who stretch their winning streak to six games.
Brandon Anderson made 30 saves in a losing cause for the Hurricanes (3-4-0-2), who drop their third straight decision.
BRONCOS 4, WHEAT KINGS 1
Taylor Vause and Stepan Novotny each netted a goal and an assist to lead the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday.
Brad Hoban and Cody Eakin also counted for the Broncos (6-6-0-0), who defeat the Wheat Kings for the second night in a row and stretch their winning streak to four games, overall. Mark Friesen stopped 30 of 31 shots he faced to claim the win.
Mark Stone – with his sixth of the season – scored the lone marker for the Wheat Kings (4-6-0-0), who see their losing skid hit six games. Liam Liston made 22 saves in a losing cause.
REBELS 6, RAIDERS 2
Adam Kambeitz scored three goals and Byron Froese score twice to lead the Red Deer Rebels to a 6-2 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
Andrej Kudrna also scored while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Alex Petrovic each chipped in three assists for the Rebels (8-3-0-0), who outshot the visiting Raiders 52-23 in the contest. Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves to net the victory.
Mike Winther and Igor Revenko scored for the Raiders (5-6-1-0), who close out their six-game road trip with a 2-3-1 record. Eric Williams turned in a 46-save effort in a losing cause for the Raiders.
TIGERS 6, OIL KINGS 4
Ryan Harrison scored twice and Linden Vey chipped in four assists to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 6-4 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday.
Tyler Pitlick notched a goal and two assists while Hunter Shinkaruk – with his first WHL tally – Wacey Hamilton and Sam Dezman also scored for the Tigers (4-3-0-0), who sweep their weekend home-and-home series versus the Oil Kings. Tyler Bunz made 30 saves in the victory.
Mike Piluso, Jordan Hickmott, Josh Lazowski and Travis Ewanyk scored for the Oil Kings (5-4-0-0), who went 2-for-6 on the power play in the contest. Laurent Brossoit and Cam Lanigan combined for 22 saves in the loss.
BRUINS 6, GIANTS 3
Ryan Howse scored three power play goals in less than a minute in the second period as the Chilliwack Bruins doubled up the visiting Vancouver Giants 6-3 on Saturday.
Robin Soudek notched two goals and two assists while rookie Steven Hodges scored his first WHL goal for the Bruins (5-4-0-0), who were 3-for-7 on the power play in the game. Lucas Gore made 31 saves to claim the victory.
Cain Franson – with his first WHL tally – Dalton Sward and Craig Cunningham scored for the Giants (5-5-1-1), who suffer their third straight defeat. Mark Segal and Brendan Jensen combined for 25 saves in the loss.
COUGARS 8, BLAZERS 1
Brett Connolly, Charles Inglis and Sena Acolatse each scored twice to lead the visiting Prince George Cougars to an 8-1 win over the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
James Priestner turned aside 39 of 40 shots to earn the victory for the Cougars (5-4-1-0), who have won two straight and three of their last four games, while Cody Carlson and Taylor Thompson – with his first WHL goal – also scored.
Brendan Ranford – with his 10th of the season – scored the lone goal for the Blazers (4-6-0-1), who allowed three power play goals on eight Cougars’ man advantage chances in the contest. Jeff Bosch and Jon Groenheyde combined for 17 saves in the loss.
CHIEFS 3, SILVERTIPS 1
Tyler Johnson scored once and added two assists to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Saturday.
Kenton Miller and Blake Gal also counted for the Chiefs (3-5-0-0), who outshot the visiting ‘Tips 45-19 in the contest. James Reid made 18 saves to claim the win.
Tyler Maxwell scored his 11th goal of the season for the Silvertips (5-2-1-1), who have lost four of their last five games. Luke Siemens made 42 saves in the loss.
WINTERHAWKS 5, ROCKETS 1
Ty Rattie and Ryan Johansen each tallied two goals and an assist to lead the visiting Portland Winterhawks to a 5-1 triumph over the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday.
Spencer Bennett also scored and Sven Bartschi chipped in three assists for the Winterhawks (8-2-0-1), who earn their second straight victory. Mac Carruth made 32 saves to take the victory.
Geordie Wudrick scored his first goal of the season for the Rockets (3-6-0-0), who were scoreless on five power play chances in the contest. Adam Brown made 27 saves in a losing cause.

HITMEN 3, THUNDERBIRDS 2 O/T
Jaynen Rissling scored his first WHL goal 3:27 into overtime to lift the visiting Calgary Hitmen to a 3-2 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday.
Cody Beach and Justin Kirsch also scored for the Hitmen (4-4-0-0), who improve to 2-1 through the first three games of their U.S. Division tour. Juraj Holly turned aside 33 of 35 shots he faced to record his first career WHL win.
Charles Wells and Tyler Alos scored for the Thunderbirds (5-2-1-0), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end with the overtime setback. Calvin Pickard made 28 saves in the loss.
