OIL KINGS WIN EASTERN CONFERENCE TITLE
OIL KINGS WIN EASTERN CONFERENCE FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR – The Edmonton Oil Kings completed a WHL Eastern Conference Championship hat trick, winning their third straight title after defeating the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final on Saturday night.
Brett Pollock scored twice and set up another, including potting the game-winning marker 14:22 into the third period as the Oil Kings claimed a 4-1 best-of-seven series win. Edgars Kulda and Mads Eller also scored for the Oil Kings.
Tristan Jarry made 16 saves on 19 shots to post the win for Edmonton, which outshot the Tigers 52-19 in the series-clinching victory.
Cole Sanford scored his 10th and 11th goals of the post-season for the Tigers, who twice held one-goal leads in the contest.
Marek Langhamer stopped 48 of 52 shots to finish his playoff run with a 2.35 goals-against average and a stellar .935 save percentage.
The Oil Kings will now go up against a familiar foe, the Portland Winterhawks, in the 2014 WHL Championship Series. The teams will be meeting for the third consecutive year to play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
The 2014 WHL Championship Series begins on Saturday, May 3, in Portland, OR.
