Hamill helps Canadian U-18 team win opener

Breclav, Czech — Everett Silvertips forward Zach Hamill scored a goal and added an assist as Canada’s U-18 team beat Switzerland 5-3 in the opening game of the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic.

rHamill, of Port Coquitlam, B.C. and one of 10 WHL players on the Canadian roster, tallied Canada’s second goal of the game early in the second period, and also set up the first of three by Jonathan Toews – a first-overall pick of the Tri-City Americans in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft.

rTeam Canada has won Gold in eight of the previous nine U-18 event, but most recently took the Silver medal at the 2005 U-18 World Championships in April in the Czech Republic, losing to the U.S. in the championship final.

rCanada’s next game at the Junior World Cup is Wednesday versus Sweden.
