Friday’s WHL Round-up
BLADES KEEP ROAD WIN STREAK ALIVE WITH VICTORY OVER BRUINS — Charles Inglis scored the game-winner as the visiting Saskatoon Blades erased a 3-1 deficit to post a 4-3 win over the Chilliwack Bruins in Western Hockey League action on Friday, December 5th.
Burke Gallimore, Walker Wintoneak and Stefan Elliott also scored for the Blades (22-7-2-0), who post their 12th consecutive road victory, tying them for second place on the WHL’s record list for most consecutive road victories. Braden Holtby made 23 saves to record his 18th win of the season and 60th of his WHL career.
Ryan Howse, Partik Bhungal and Liam Darragh scored for the Bruins (9-17-2-2), who held a 3-1 lead up until the 12:46 point of the second frame only to see it slip away as they drop their sixth straight decision. Mark Friesen made 31 saves in the defeat.
ROCKETS 3, PATS 2
Brandon McMillan’s sixth goal of the season 15:49 into the third period stood as the winner as the Kelowna Rockets edged the visiting Regina Pats 3-2 on Friday night.
Mitchell Callahan and Evan Bloodoff also scored for the Rockets (18-11-0-0), who have won six of their last seven games and improve to 11-3 on home ice this season. Kris Lazaruk made 21 saves to pick up his ninth win of the season.
Jordan Eberle – with his 21st and 22nd goasl of the season – tallied both markers for the Pats (17-13-1-3), who drop their second straight decision and fall to 2-5 through seven games of their current eight-game road trip. Linden Rowat made 32 saves in a losing cause.
COUGARS 6, SILVERTIPS 5 O/T
Defenseman Jeff Regier scored 2:20 into overtime to lift the Prince George Cougars to a 6-5 victory over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday.
Parker Stanfield – with a goal and an assist – Brian Matte, Nick Buonassisi, Marek Viedensky and Justin Maylan also scored for the Cougars (11-18-0-1), who trailed the contest 5-3 entering the third period but managed to rally to snap their five-game losing streak. Kevin Armstrong made 20 saves in the win.
Byron Froese and Daniel Bartek each scored two goals while former Cougar Dale Hunt also counted for the Silvertips (14-11-4-0), who suffer their second straight setback. Rookie goaltender Kent Simpson stopped 37 of 43 shots in a losing cause.
AMERICANS 6, THUNDERBIRDS 1
Jason Reese scored three goals and Mitch Fadden added four assists to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday night.
Kruise Reddick – with a goal and an assist – Jordan Messier and Brock Sutherland also scored for the Americans (21-7-0-2), who win their seventh straight contest and improve to 14-1 at home. Chet Pickard made 22 saves to claim his 17th victory of the season.
David Richard scored the only goal for the Thunderbirds (12-14-1-2), who allowed the Ams to score on three of four power plays en route to seeing a three-game winning streak come to an end. Jacob DeSerres made 28 saves in the defeat.
HITMEN 5, WINTER HAWKS 1
Brett Sonne scored twice and added an assist to lead the visiting Calgary Hitmen to a 5-1 victory over the Portland Winter Hawks on Friday.
Chase Schaber, Bostjan Golicic and Brandon Kozun also scored for the Hitmen (25-4-1-1), who are undefeated in regulation in their last 13 games, while Kyle Bortis chipped in three assists. Rookie netminder Michael Snider made 22 saves to improve to a perfect 5-0 through five career appearances.
Jonathan Milhouse scored the only goal for the Winter Hawks (8-22-0-0), who were outshot 49-23 by the visiting Hitmen as they drop their eighth decision in their last nine games. Kurtis Mucha made 44 saves in the loss.
TIGERS 5, WARRIORS 4
Tristan King, Tyler Ennis and Zdenek Okal each tallied a goal and an assist as the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers edged the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4 on Friday.
Linden Vey and Sean Ringrose also scored for the Tigers (18-8-2-3), who earn their second straight win and their 10th win in their last 12 games. Rookie goaltender Tyler Bunz made 16 saves to claim his fourth win of the season.
Thomas Frazee, Ian Duval and Joel Broda each notched a goal and an assist while Jason Bast also scored for the Warriors (7-20-0-1), who suffer their sixth straight defeat and have won just twice in their last 17 games. Jeff Bosch made 30 saves in a losing cause.
WHEAT KINGS 5, BRONCOS 1
Matt Calvert and Mark Stone each picked up a goal and an assist as the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings skated to a 5-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night.
Keith Aulie, Andrew Clark and Nathan Green also scored for the Wheat Kings (16-11-1-1), who were 1-for-3 on the power play while holding the Broncos scoreless on five power play chances in the contest. James Priestner made 29 saves to earn the win.
Justin Dowling – with his 10th goal of the season – had the lone marker for the Broncos (17-13-0-1), who have dropped four of their last five contests while falling to 0-3 versus the Wheat Kings this season. Travis Yonkman made 26 saves in the loss.
OIL KINGS 3, BLAZERS 2
Craig McCallum notched his 10th goal of the season and chipped in an assist as the Edmonton Oil Kings edged the visiting Kamloops Blazers 3-2 on Friday night.
Jeff Lee scored, stretching his point streak to eight games, and Brett Breitkreuz also counted for the Oil Kings (14-16-1-3), who were 1-for-5 on the power play in the contest. Torrie Jung made 21 saves to earn his eighth win of the season.
Kenton Dulle and C.J. Stretch each tallied a goal and an assist for the Blazers (13-15-1-3), who suffer their second straight setback. Justin Leclerc made 21 saves in a losing cause.
HURRICANES 5, REBELS 0
Colton Sceviour notched two goals and an assist while Carter Ashton scored once and chipped in two helpers to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Friday.
Rookie Garrett Taylor scored his first WHL goal and Dan Iwanski also counted for the Hurricanes (16-12-0-1), who win their fifth consecutive contest. Juha Metsola made 17 saves to record his fourth shutout of the season and seventh of his WHL career.
Darcy Kuemper made 16 saves in a losing cause for the Rebels (10-17-0-5), who see a modest two-game winning streak come to an end.
