HURRICANES DOWN TIGERS – Daniel Johnston’s power play goal 6:30 into the third period was the winner as the Lethbridge Hurricanes skated to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League action on Friday.
Phil Tot and Cam Braes also scored and Graham Hood chipped in two assists for the Hurricanes (16-26-0-1), who earn their second win in their last three games and remain tied with Prince Albert for 11th place in the Eastern Conference. Damien Ketlo made 31 saves to claim the victory.
Emerson Etem – with his 31st of the season – scored the lone goal for the Tigers (23-14-2-2), who suffer their second straight loss. Tyler Bunz turned aside 34 of 37 shots he faced to absorb the loss.
PATS 3, BLADES 0
Matt Hewitt turned in a 33-save effort to record his second shutout of the season as the Regina Pats blanked the visiting Saskatoon Blades 3-0 on Friday.
Jordan Weal notched a goal and an assist while Morgan Klimchuk and Matt Marantz also scored for the Pats (23-15-3-1), who earn their fourth consecutive victory and move into a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference.
Alex Moodie made 28 saves in a losing cause for the Blades (22-17-0-1), who see a two-game winning streak come to an end and fall five points behind the Pats in the Eastern Conference standings.
RAIDERS 4, WHEAT KINGS 1
Justin Maylan scored and set up two more to lead the Prince Albert Raiders to a 4-1 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday.
Mike Winther – with a goal and an assist – Kellan Tochkin and Jonas Knutsen also counted for the Raiders (15-24-1-2), who went 1-for-4 on the power play in the victory. Cole Holowenko made 29 saves in the win.
Michael Ferland scored his 19th goal of the season while Mark Stone added an assist in his first game back for the Wheat Kings (21-17-1-1), who suffer their third straight loss and remain in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Curtis Honey made 33 saves in the defeat.
BRONCOS 3, REBELS 2
Taylor Vause notched a goal and two assists to lead the visiting Swift Current Broncos to a 3-2 victory over the Red Deer Rebels on Friday.
Jon Groenheyde turned in a 38-save performance for the Rebels (16-20-2-3), who snap a six-game losing skid on the road. Christian Magnus and Reece Scarlett also scored for the Broncos in the victory.
Joel Hamilton and Colten Mayor scored for the Rebels (17-18-0-3), who outshot the visitors 40-28 in the contest but suffer the loss. Deven Dubyk and Bolton Pouliot combined for 25 saves in a losing cause.
WINTERHAWKS 3, SILVERTIPS 1
Brad Ross scored all three goals to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 3-1 win over the visiting Everett Silvertips on Friday.
Ty Rattie chipped in two assists to give him 71 points on the season for the Winterhawks (26-11-2-1), who cruise to their sixth consecutive victory and their 14th straight home-ice win. Brendan Burke made 30 saves to claim his second career win.
Kohl Bauml scored the only goal for the Silvertips (7-23-1-7), who drop their 11th consecutive decision on the road. Kent Simpson turned in 55-save performance in a losing cause for the Silvertips.
BLAZERS 2, COUGARS 0
Cole Cheveldave turned in a 32-save effort to post his second straight shutout as the visiting Kamloops Blazers blanked the Prince George Cougars 2-0 on Friday.
Colin Smith notched his 20th goal of the season and added an assist while Tim Bozon also counted for the Blazers (27-10-1-2), who shut out the Cougars for a second consecutive time and remain firmly in first place in the B.C. Division.
Drew Owsley made 41 saves in a losing cause for the Cougars (13-24-0-2), who suffer their sixth straight shutout loss of the season.
CHIEFS 5, WARRIORS 2
Corbin Baldwin and Mitch Holmberg each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-2 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday.
Blake Gal, Todd Fiddler and Dominik Uher also scored for the Chiefs (18-13-2-3), who allowed the game’s first goal but scored the next four en route to the win. Mac Engel made 24 saves to earn his 16th win of the season.
Cody Beach and Torrin White scored for the Warriors (24-12-4-1), who suffer their third straight loss and close out their U.S. Division tour with a 1-3-1 record. Spencer Tremblay made 35 saves in a losing effort.
AMERICANS 7, THUNDERBIRDS 3
Patrick Holland scored twice and set up two more while Adam Hughesman notched two goals and an assists to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 7-3 win over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday.
Brendan Shinnimin – with a goal and two assists – Jordan Messier and Mason Wilgosh also scored and Brian Williams chipped in three assists for the Americans (31-7-0-0), who pick up their 12th consecutive victory. Eric Comrie made 20 saves to post the win.
Colin Jacobs scored on a penalty shot while Tyler Alos and Shea Theodore also scored for the Thunderbirds (16-20-0-1), who trailed 5-0 by the midway point of the second period en route to their third straight loss. Daniel Cotton made 38 saves to absorb the loss.
ROCKETS 5, ROYALS 2
Myles Bell scored twice and added an assist as the visiting Kelowna Rockets to a 5-2 win over the Victoria Royals on Friday.
Shane McColgan, Cody Chikie and Carter Rigby each tallied a goal and an assist for the Rockets (16-19-2-3), who went 2-for-6 on the power play as they earn their second win in a row. Adam Brown turned aside 36 of 38 shots to post the win.
Hayden Rintoul – with his 10th of the season – and Cody Chikie scored while Kevin Sundher chipped in two assists for the Royals (13-24-2-2), who slump to their eighth straight defeat. Keith Hamilton made 23 saves in the loss.
