WHEAT KINGS DOUBLE UP COUGARS – Michael Ferland scored three goals and set up another for a four-point outing as the Brandon Wheat Kings managed a 6-3 win over the visiting Prince George Cougars in Western Hockey League action on Friday.
Ryan Pulock, Alessio Bertaggia and Carter Proft – with his first WHL marker – also scored and Mark Stone picked up three assists for the Wheat Kings (4-1-0-1), who put up six goals for a second straight game. Corbin Boes made 28 saves to claim his third win of the season.
Spencer Asuchak, Jordan Tkatch and Troy Bourke scored for the Cougars (2-3-0-1), who suffer their second loss in a row. Devon Fordyce and Drew Owsley combined for 31 saves in a losing cause.
REBELS 4, HITMEN 2
John Persson and Colten Mayor each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday.
Locke Muller and Cory Millette also scored for the Rebels (3-2-0-0), who went 2-for-7 on the power play in the contest. Patrik Bartosak made 32 saves to backstop the Rebels to the win.
Victor Rask and Brady Brassart scored for the Hitmen (1-3-0-0), who were scoreless on four power play chances in the game. Brandon Glover made 19 saves to absorb the loss.
OIL KINGS 3, WARRIORS 1
Martin Gernat scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season to lead the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings to a 3-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday.
Kristians Pelss also scored also scored for the Oil Kings (3-1-1-1), who trailed 1-0 after two periods but scored three times in the third period to claim the win. Laurent Brossoit made 22 saves to pick up the victory.
Sebastian Svendsen scored the only goal for the Warriors (4-2-0-0), who see a four-game win streak come to an end. Luke Siemens made 27 saves in the loss.
PATS 5, HURRICANES 4 S/O
Dominik Volek scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift the Regina Pats to a 5-4 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night.
Andrew Rieder scored twice while Volek and Kyle Burroughs also scored in regulation play for the Pats (5-1-0-0), who win their second straight contest and move into first place in the overall WHL standings. Matt Hewitt turned in a 34-save effort through regulation and overtime, and denied three of five ‘Canes’ shootout attempts to post the win.
Macoy Erkamps – with his first WHL marker – Russ Maxwell, Derek Ryckman and Brody Sutter scored in regulation for the Hurricanes (2-3-0-1), who drop their third straight decision. Brandon Anderson made 28 saves through three periods and overtime, but was beaten three times in the shootout to take the loss.
BLAZERS 6, CHIEFS 4
Brendan Ranford scored and set up two more in his season debut to lead the Kamloops Blazers to a 6-4 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs on Friday.
JT Barnett, Jordan DePape, Austin Madaisky, Aspen Sterzer and J.C. Lipon also scored for the Blazers (3-1-0-0), who pick up their third win in a row and have scored 20 goals in that span. Cam Lanigan made 20 saves to pick up his first win of the season.
Darren Kramer scored twice while Reid Gow and Jason Fram – with his first WHL tally – also scored for the Chiefs (1-2-0-1), who suffer their second straight defeat. Zach Rakochy and Mac Engel combined for 25 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 5, ROCKETS 2
Adam Hughesman scored twice and set up another to lead the Tri-City Americans to a 5-2 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Friday.
Connor Rankin tallied a goal and two assists while Jordan Messier and Mitch Topping also scored for the Americans (4-2-0-0), who earn revenge for their 4-3 loss to the Rockets in Kelowna on Wednesday. Eric Comrie made 27 saves to post his second win of the season.
Cody Chikie and Myles Bell scored for the Rockets (3-1-0-0), who suffer their first loss of the season. Adam Brown turned aside 33 of 38 shots he faced in a losing cause.
ROYALS 5, TIGERS 4
Hayden Rintoul scored his second goal of the game with 24 seconds to play in the third period to lift the Victoria Royals to a 5-4 win over the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday.
Robin Soudek, Logan Nelson and Jamie Crooks also scored for the Royals (4-3-0-0), who earn a split in their two-game series versus the Tigers after losing on Thursday night. Keith Hamilton made 34 saves to claim his third win of the season.
Emerson Etem scored all four goals for the Tigers (3-3-0-0), giving him a WHL-leading 11 goals in just five games this season. Tyler Bunz made 27 saves in a losing cause.
SILVERTIPS 4, WINTERHAWKS 2
Ryan Harrison picked up a goal and an assist to pace the Everett Silvertips to a 4-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks on Friday night.
Jesse Mychan, Cody Fowlie and Brennan Yadlowski also scored for the Silvertips (1-1-0-2), who pick up their first victory of the season after having the last 10 days off. Kent Simpson turned in a 40-save performance to post the win.
Derrick Pouliot and Taylor Leier – with his first WHL goal – scored for the Winterhawks (3-3-0-0), who have dropped three of their last four games. Mac Carruth made 27 saves in the defeat.
RAIDERS 5, THUNDERBIRDS 0
Eric Williams turned aside all 36 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season as the visiting Prince Albert Raiders managed a 5-0 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday.
Tyler Vanscourt scored a hat trick while Todd Fiddler and Antoine Corbin also scored for the Raiders (2-4-0-1), who earn their first road win of the season.
Calvin Pickard and Daniel Cotton combined for 40 saves in a losing cause for the Thunderbirds (0-3-0-0), who drop their third straight game to start the season and have been outscored 15-5 in the process.
