FRIDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
BLAZERS TOPPLE BRUINS – Colin Smith scored three goals to lead the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-2 win over the visiting Chilliwack Bruins in Western Hockey League action on Friday night.
Jordan DePape notched a goal and an assist and Dylan Willick also scored for the Blazers (20-20-1-1), who went 1-for-6 on the power play in the contest as they earn their 20th win of the season. Jeff Bosch made 16 saves to claim his 16th win of the season.
Steve Oursov and Kevin Sundher scored for the Bruins (17-18-2-1), who suffer their fourth loss in a row and drop to 10th place in the Western Conference standings. Lucas Gore made 25 saves in the defeat.
GIANTS 4, COUGARS 3
Teal Burns broke a 3-3 tie midway through the third period to lift the visiting Vancouver Giants to a 4-3 win over the Prince George Cougars on Friday.
Brendan Rowinski, Mark Reners and Darren Bestland also scored for the Giants (19-17-1-4), who earn their third win in arrow and move back into a tie with the Cougars for first place in the B.C. Division. Mark Segal made 22 saves to record the win.
Brett Connolly and Sena Acolatse each netted a goal and an assist while Spencer Asuchak also scored for the Cougars (20-16-2-1), who went 2-for-8 on the power play in the contest. James Priestner and Ty Rimmer combined for 23 saves in the loss.
CHIEFS 6, HURRICANES 0
Tyler Johnson scored his 28th goal of the season and James Reid made 21 saves to claim his fourth shutout of the season as the Spokane Chiefs blanked the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-0 on Friday.
Dominik Uher, Kenton Miller and Blake Gal each tallied a goal and an assist while Anthony Bardaro and Mitch Holmberg also counted for the Chiefs (23-10-3-2), who win their fifth straight game and move within two points of the Winterhawks for top spot in the U.S. Division.
Brandon Anderson made 26 saves in the loss for the Hurricanes (13-18-2-6), who have lost seven of their last eight games.
SILVERTIPS 3, AMERICANS 2
Landon Ferraro scored a pair of goals to pace the Everett Silvertips to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Tri-City Americans on Friday.
Clayton Cumiskey notched his fourth goal of the season for the Silvertips (17-18-2-3), who see a three-game losing skid come to an end. Luke Siemens made 29 saves to record his sixth win of the season.
Brendan Shinnimin and Tyler Schmidt scored for the Americans (23-12-1-1), who see a four-game winning streak come to an end. Drew Owsley turned aside 36 of 39 shots he faced in a losing cause.
THUNDERBIRDS 3, ROCKETS 1
Burke Gallimore scored his 20th goal of the season to help the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-1 win over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Friday night.
Travis Toomey and Marcel Noebels also found the net for the Thunderbirds (17-15-3-4), who converted one of three power play chances in the game. Calvin Pickard made 28 saves to record his 17th victory of the season.
Geordie Wudrick – with his second goal in as many games – scored the only goal for the Rockets (21-19-0-0), who suffer their fourth straight defeat and fall to third place in the B.C. Division. Jordon Cooke stopped 33 of 36 shots in the loss.
BLADES 5, RAIDERS 1
Stefan Elliott scored once and added an assist to lead the visiting Saskatoon Blades to a 5-1 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday.
Alex Elliott, Darren Dietz, Jake Trask and Ryan Olsen also found the net for the Blades (31-9-0-1), who improve to 5-1 since returning to action from the holiday break. Steven Stanford made 25 saves to earn his 20th win of the season.
Mark McNeill – with his 18th of the season – scored the lone marker for the Raiders (16-23-2-2), who were outshot 50-26 by the visiting Blades. Jamie Tucker made 45 saves in the loss.
BRONCOS 5, TIGERS 0
Mark Friesen made 20saves to record his fourth shutout of the season as the Swift Current Broncos blanked the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers 5-0 on Friday.
Dillon Wagner, Trevor Cameron, Andy Blanke, Brad Hoban and Kyle Verdino scored for the Broncos (22-22-0-1), who stretch their winning streak to three games and climb back to the .500 mark.
Tyler Bunz and Deven Dubyk combined for 19 saves in a losing cause for the Tigers (25-12-2-0), who are 2-3 through their first five games after returning from the holiday break.
WHEAT KINGS 9, HITMEN 2
Brenden Walker Mark Stone, Michael Ferland and Shayne Wiebe each scored two goals to lead the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 9-2 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Friday.
Tyrell Seaman also scored while Scott Glennie chipped in five assists for the Wheat Kings (14-23-1-4), who snap a four-game losing skid and move to within three points for a share of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Corbin Boes made 29 saves to record the win.
Chase Clayton and Keaton Lubin each scored their first WHL goals for the Hitmen (12-27-2-1), who gave up the game’s first six goals as they suffer their fourth consecutive loss. Brandon Glover and Michael Snider combined for 41 saves in the loss.
ICE 3, WARRIORS 1
Kevin King and Matt Fraser each scored their 18th goals of the season to lead the Kootenay Ice to a 3-1 win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday.
Luke Paulsen also scored for the Ice (27-11-1-2), who win their third straight game and open up a four-point lead atop the Central Division standings. Brett Teskey made 24 saves to claim his eighth victory of the season.
Spencer Edwards – with his 19th of the season – scored the only goal for the Warriors (25-15-0-2), who had Quinton Howden back in the line-up for the contest after he returned from playing for Canada at the 2011 World Junior Championship. Thomas Heemskerk turned in a 35-save effort in the loss versus his former team.
PATS 2, REBELS 1 S/O
Shayne Neigun scored in the 10th round of a shootout to lift the Regina Pats to a 2-1 triumph over the visiting Red Deer Rebels on Friday.
Tanner Olstad scored in regulation for the Pats (14-20-5-1), who stretch their winning streak to four games. Matt Hewitt turned in a valiant 40-save effort through regulation and overtime, and was beaten just once on 10 Rebels’ shootout attempts to claim the victory.
Byron Froese scored the only goal for the Rebels (24-12-1-4), who suffer their third straight defeat but remain in third place in the Eastern Conference. Darcy Kuemper turned aside 28 of 29 shots in regulation, but was beaten twice in the shootout to take the loss.
