DEAN EVASON JOINS WASHINGTON CAPITALS COACHING STAFF

Calgary, AB – Calgary Hitmen General Manager and Head Coach Kelly Kisio announced today Co-Coach Dean Evason has joined the Washington Capitals as an Assistant Coach. Evason will join incumbent Jay Leach as an assistant under head coach Glen Hanlon.

rThe Flin Flon, MB native played 13 years in the National Hockey League with five different teams (Washington, Hartford, San Jose, Dallas and Calgary) scoring 372 points (139 goals, 233 assists) and 1002 penalty minutes in 803 regular season games. Evason finished his NHL career as a member of the Calgary Flames in the 1995-96 season and went on to play professional hockey in Europe. Following his 1998-99 season in Europe Evason joined the Hitmen during the ’99 WHL playoff run as an Assistant Coach helping the team capture the WHL title.

rIn 1999, Dean was hired as the Head Coach of the Kamloops Blazers where he spent three seasons obtaining a regular season record of 109-84-17. During the 2002-03 season Evason joined the Vancouver Giants where he spent two seasons posting a 59-61-14-10 record. During the 2003-04 campaign Evason led the Giants to their first winning record and a berth in the Western Conference Semi Finals. Evason re-joined the Hitmen as a Co-Coach prior to the 2004-05 season helping lead the team to a 34-23-9-6 record.

rEvason split his junior hockey career with the Spokane Flyers (two seasons) and with the Kamloops Junior Oilers (three seasons) of the Western Hockey League. In his final season in the WHL, Evason captured the scoring title in both the regular season and playoffs as the Kamloops Junior Oilers captured the WHL Title during the ‘83-84 campaign.

rEvason will be formally inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum on October 21, 2005.
