CANADA WEST CONFERENCE REPORT – University of Alberta Golden Bears Freshman goaltender Real Cyr has been named the Canada West Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending October 19th.

Cyr, a product of Victoire, SK, posted two wins, including a shutout, in two games on the weekend as the Golden Bears swept a two-game series versus the U.B.C. Thunderbirds in Vancouver, B.C.

The 21-year-old turned in a 19-save shutout performance to backstop the Golden Bears to a 4-0 victory over the Thunderbirds on Friday, October 17th, then followed up with a 23-save effort as the Golden Bears completed the sweep over the T-Birds with a 5-2 win on Saturday, October 18th.

Cyr, an Arts student, played four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars from 2004-08.

Elsewhere in Canada West action on the weekend, the University of Manitoba Bisons and the University of Regina Cougars split a two-game series in Regina, SK. On Friday, former Regina Pat Kyle Ross scored the shootout winner as the Cougars edged the Bisons 3-2. On Saturday, former Prince Albert Raider Mike Hellyer notched two goals and two assists to lead the Bisons to a 7-1 victory over the Cougars to earn the split.

Also on the weekend, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns split a two-game series in Lethbridge, AB. On Friday, WHL grad Steven Gillen notched a goal and an assists while former Kootenay Ice star Steve DaSilva notched three assists to lead the visiting Huskies to a 4-3 win over the Pronghorns. On Saturday, former WHLer Jason Roberts netted a hat trick and an assist while WHL grad Dustin Moore picked up two goals and four points as the Pronghorns defeated the Huskies 7-1 to split the series.
