Canada West Update

CANADA WEST CONFERENCE REPORT – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies maintained first place overall in the CIS Canada West Hockey conference after picking up a pair of victories over the U.B.C. Thunderbirds in Vancouver, B.C., on the weekend.

On Friday, November 7th, former WHL netminder Jeff Harvey turned aside all 21 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season while WHL grads Steve DaSilva and Travis Brisebois scored as the Huskies blanked the Thunderbirds 2-0. WHL alumnus Gerry Festa made 27 saves in the loss for the Thunderbirds.

On Saturday, DaSilva picked up another goal and an assist while fellow WHL grads Casey Lee, Chris Durand and Shaun Vey also scored as the Huskies completed the series sweep with a 4-2 win over the T-Birds. Former WHLers Jeff Lynch and John Flatters scored for the Thunderbirds.

Elsewhere in Canada West action on the weekend, the University of Alberta Golden Bears swept a two-game series versus the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

On Friday, WHL grads Derek Ryan and Ben Kilgour scored while former WHL Goaltender of the Year nominee Aaron Sorochan made 21 saves as the Golden Bears defeated the visiting Pronghorns 4-1. Former Calgary Hitmen and Prince George Cougars goaltender Scott Bowles made 26 saves in the loss for the Pronghorns.

On Saturday, WHL grads Jason Fransoo and Lee Zalasky each scored twice while former Portland Winter Hawk Brian Woolger scored once and added three assists to lead the Golden Bears to a 9-1 thrashing of the visiting Pronghorns to complete the series sweep. WHL grad Mark Shefchyk scored the lone goal for the Pronghorns.

Also on the weekend, the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons earned a pair of wins over the University of Calgary Dinos.

On Friday, WHL alumni Cole Hunter and Kyle Howarth scored to lead the visiting Bisons to a 3-0 shutout win over the Dinos. Former WHL netminder Dustin Butler made 32 saves in the loss for the Dinos.

On Saturday, Hunter added a goal and an assist while former Red Deer Rebel and Prince George Cougar Jared Walker also scored as the Bisons edged the Dinos 4-3 to complete the road sweep. WHL grads Paul Gentile and Travis Friedley scored in the loss for the Dinos.
