GOLDEN BEARS WIN 46th CONFERENCE CROWN – The University of Alberta Golden Bears are Canada West Conference Champions for the 46th time in the 72-year history of Canada West Hockey after completing a 2-0 best-of-three series sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on the weekend.

rThe Golden Bears will now advance to the CIS University Cup tournament for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons. The Huskies will also advance to the University Cup tournament as Canada West finalists.

rOn Friday, March 7th, former Portland Winter Hawk Brian Woolger scored a pair of goals while WHL grad Aaron Sorochan stopped 27 shots as the Golden Bears skated to an 8-3 victory over the Huskies at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, AB, in the series-opener.

rOn Saturday, March 8th, the Golden Bears completed the series sweep with a 5-0 shutout win at Clare Drake Arena. Former WHLer Chad Klassen scored two goals while Sorochan made 23 saves to record the shutout.

rAARON SOROCHAN NAMED CANADA WEST HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

rJunior goaltender Aaron Sorochan of the University of Alberta Golden Bears has been named the Canada West Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending March 9, 2008.

rThe 6’0″, 180-pound Education student from Edmonton, Alberta registered his conference-leading fourth shutout of the season as he backstopped Alberta to its 46th Canada West Hockey championship.
r
rSorochan made 27 saves in an 8-3 victory in Game 1 of the Canada West Hockey Final on Friday night and then made 23 more as he registered his 25th win of the season as Alberta swept Saskatchewan with a 5-0 victory on Saturday.
r
rThe Canada West Hockey second team all-star stopped 50 of the 53 shots he faces in the series for a .943 save percentage and led conference goaltenders with a 1.86 goals-against average in the postseason.

rOverall, Sorochan is 25-5-1 with a 2.32 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
