Canada West Update

CANADA WEST CONFERENCE REPORT – University of Manitoba Bisons’ Senior goaltender Krister Toews has been named the Canada West Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending November 4th.

rToews, a product of Kleefeld, MB, stopped 64 of 69 shots he faced over two games to help the Bisons to a two-game sweep over the U.B.C Thunderbirds in Vancouver on the weekend.

rOn Friday, November 2nd, Toews turned in a 34-save effort to backstop the visiting Bisons to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Thunderbirds. He followed up with a 30-save performance on Saturday, November 3rd as the Bisons managed a 3-2 victory over the T-Birds to complete the road sweep.

rToews, a science student, played three seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Portland Winter Hawks.

rElsewhere in Canada West action on the weekend, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies swept a two-game series versus the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns.

rOn Friday night, former WHLer Russel Monette stopped all 19 shots he faced to backstop the Huskies to a 3-0 shutout win over the Pronghorns. On Saturday, former WHL defenseman Jesse Zetariuk scored the winner as the Huskies skated to a 3-1 win over the Pronghorns to complete the sweep.

rAlso on the weekend, the University of Alberta Golden Bears picked up two victories on the road versus the University of Regina Cougars.

rOn Friday night, WHL grad Aaron Sorochan made 16 saves to record a shutout while fellow WHL alumni Eric Hunter and Derek Ryan each tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Golden Bears to a 5-0 win over the Cougars in Regina. On Saturday, former Moose Jaw Warrior Harlan Anderson scored the winner as the Golden Bears completed the series sweep with a 4-1 victory over the Cougars.
