SEVEN WHL GRADS HELP LEAD U.N.B TO UNIVERSITY CUP – The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds captured the 2007 University Cup, beating the Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-2 in overtime in the final of the Cavendish University Cup tournament on Sunday, March 25th in Moncton, NB.

rSeven Western Hockey League graduates helped the Varsity Reds to the title including Colin Sinclair (Ktn), Jesse Ferguson (Ktn, Por, Kel), Nick Marach (Ktn, Por, Van, Kel), Andrew DeSousa (T.C., Van, Spo, Reg), Dustin Friesen (S.C.), Denny Johnston (M.H., P.G., Sask) and Craig Perry (Sea, Spo).

rFerguson, a defenseman from Langley, B.C., was named to the tournament All Star Team, while Marach earned an assist on the game-winning overtime goal in the championship final.

rThe Canada West champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies lost both of their round-robin games at the tournament.

rWHL grads Colin Sinclair, Mark Shefchyk and Jay Langager were among those who took home hardware as the CIS handed out its annual awards on Wednesday, March 21st.

rSinclair, who won a Memorial Cup with the Kootenay Ice in 2002, was presented the Dr. Randy Gregg Award for outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement. Sinclair helped the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds capture the 2007 University Cup, and co-captained Canada’s Gold medal-winning team at the Winter Universiade in Italy in January.

rShefchyk, who played for the Calgary Hitmen, Vancouver Giants and Brandon Wheat Kings, was presented the Clare Drake Award as CIS Rookie of the Year. The 6′ 1″, 195-pound winger led the Canada West conference in scoring with 14 goals and 45 points, helping the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to a playoff spot.

rLangager, Shefchyk’s Pronghorns teammate, was named the recipient of the Senator Joseph A. Sullivan Award as the CIS Player of the Year. The former Swift Current Broncos defenseman led all Canada West rearguards in scoring with 29 points, helping the Pronghorns to a playoff berth for the first time since 2003-04.
