CANADA REBOUNDS AT WJC WITH BIG WIN OVER DENMARK
Team Canada rebounded with a strong effort against Denmark as they cruised to a 6-1 victory to post a record of 1-1 at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Trailing by a 1-0 score early on, Seattle Thunderbirds forward Mathew Barzal and Kelowna Rockets forward Rourke Chartier picked up assists on a goal from Anthony Beauvillier that tied the game at 1-1 after the first period of play.
Canada exploded for four goals in the second period to build a commanding 5-1 lead. Brandon Wheat Kings forward John Quenneville scored early in the frame to give Canada a 2-1 lead and that was followed by Barzal’s second goal of the tournament on a Canada power play. Moose Jaw Warriors captain Brayden Point tallied an assist on the fifth goal from Canada as they outshot Denmark 21-7 in the period.
Point would notch his second assist on the night on a power play goal from Dylan Strome that gave Canada a 6-1 lead and that stood as the final score. Victoria Royals defenceman Joe Hicketts and Red Deer Rebels defenceman Haydn Fleury each recorded an assist in what was a dominant performance from Canada.
Canada outshot Denmark by a demanding 58-11 margin and went 2/5 on the power play while holding Denmark scoreless in two power play opportunities.
Team Canada’s next game goes Tuesday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. MT/10:00 a.m. PT when they take on Switzerland.
