CALGARY HITMEN: Hitmen Foundation Donates Over $190,000
Calgary, AB – The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce its charitable arm, the Calgary Hitmen Foundation, has donated over $190,000 to local charities during the 2013-14 season. The most recent being a $10,000 donation to the Tim Bozon Trust Fund, supporting Kootenay Ice forward Tim Bozon who fell ill last month with Neisseria meningitis. This follows last season’s $400,000 donation to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation’s Camp Kindle to assist with building the camp for children and families affected by cancer.
The Calgary Hitmen Foundation raises funds for the education of Hitmen players through the scholarship program and, in addition, distributes funds to a number of areas in support of grassroots sports, health and wellness initiatives and education. Through the Calgary Hitmen Foundation 50-50 draw and community programming this season, the team distributed funds to the following charitable organizations and educational institutions:
- Calgary Board of Education – $7,787
- Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – $4,800
- Calgary Catholic Education Foundation – $12,072
- Calgary Foundation’s Flood Relief Efforts – $4,055
- Distress Centre of Calgary – $6,852
- Four Feet Companion Foundation (Pucks for Paws) – $5,000
- Hockey Calgary/KidSport – $8,500
- Mavericks Big Hearted Foundation – $5,237
- Movember Campaign – $3,845
- Parks Foundation – $9,600
- Rainbow Society – $10,000
- Shiners Hospitals for Children – $5,000
Further to the above, the Calgary Hitmen Foundation funds the Hitmen ‘NSTEP (Nutrition Students Teachers Exercising with Parents) program, an initiative that teaches youth how to make healthy eating choices and ways to incorporate daily activity through education. A $60,000 commitment has been made to the program that sees players visit Calgary schools to speak to the importance of healthy choices and physical activity.
The Calgary Hitmen Foundation was created in part as a resource for Hitmen players of the Western Hockey League to provide post-secondary education support and funding. In the last five years, 100 players have completed their post-secondary education. The team has donated approximately a quarter of a million dollars to fund players’ education at Canadian schools through this charitable program. Each year, the Hitmen have approximately 20 to 25 former players in schools across the country and occasionally in the United States. The Calgary Hitmen Foundation also donates to scholarships at both the University of Calgary and SAIT Polytechnic.
For over 15 years, the Calgary Hitmen have been giving back to the community through various initiatives. The mission of the Calgary Hitmen Foundation is to contribute to grassroots and amateur sports, promote health and wellness, and support education.
