WHL This Week – Sept. 29, 2016
We’re one week into the 2016-17 season and the headlines continue to flow with each passing day. From high-scoring affairs to nail-biting overtime outings, the opening weekend of the campaign provided plenty of excitement.
Since then, roster shuffles continue as teams iron out their personnel with players returning from NHL training camps.
A feature piece of opening weekend saw the Vancouver Giants and Saskatoon Blades pay tribute to ‘Mr. Hockey’ Gordie Howe. WHL on Shaw TV was there for each and every moment. Off the top, Andy Neal sat down with WHL Commissioner Ron Robison.
In addition to his chat with Robison, Neal also had discussions with Marty Howe and Ron Toigo, Colin Priestner, Bryan Trottier and Murray Howe, as the Giants and Blades each paid tribute to Mr. Hockey.

Out east, the Brandon Wheat Kings opened the 2016-17 season by raising three championship banners from their successful 2015-16 campaign. To top it off, the Wheat Kings recognized a group of esteemed alumni to kick off the organization’s 50th anniversary. WATCH

Medicine Hat Tigers forward Chad Butcher was named the first WHL Player of the Week in 2016-17 after piling up one goal and six assists in two games on opening weekend. FULL STORY

Swift Current Broncos goaltender Travis Child was named the first WHL Goaltender of the Week in 2016-17 after putting forth a 28-save shutout of the Saskatoon Blades on Sunday. FULL STORY

This week, the Western Hockey League unveiled ticketing and schedule information for a pair of marquee events in the coming months.
Fans can now purchase early bird tournament passes for the 2016 Western Canada U16 Challenge Cup, set for Oct. 19-23 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary. DETAILS
Tickets are also available for the 2016 CIBC Canada Russia Series, which is slated for Nov. 7 in Prince George and Nov. 8 in Edmonton. DETAILS

Sept. 23 – Red Deer Rebels trade F Taden Rattie (1998) to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a sixth round pick (2017).
Sept. 25 – Spokane Chiefs trade RW Dominic Zwerger (1996) to the Everett Silvertips in exchange for a third round pick (2017).
Sept. 26 – Kamloops Blazers trade D Cameron Reagan (1997) to the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a conditional seventh round pick (2019).
Sept. 28 – Spokane Chiefs trade G Tyson Verhelst (1997) and a third round pick (2017) to the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for G Dawson Weatherill (1999) and a fifth round pick (2018)
