WHL Firsts: Memorable moments for 15 WHL players as regular season presses on
It was a busy and successful week for 15 Western Hockey League players as they earned their first career WHL goal or first career WHL victory. Let’s take a look at who made this week’s WHL Firsts achievement list during last week’s games.
Wednesday, October 10
In a high-scoring battle between the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Kelowna Rockets, both Kyle Crosbie (Kelowna) and Simon Kubicek (Seattle) scored their first career WHL goals. Crosbie’s goal was a wrist shot right in front of the goalie that managed to trickle past the goal line at 10:14 into the second period for Kelowna, while Kubicek’s came shortly after with a up close wrist shot 13:32 into the second period for Seattle.

Wednesday’s game proved successful for a pair of Portland Winterhawks players. Michal Kvasnica also notched his first career WHL goal when playing against the Edmonton Oil Kings where he had the perfect shot from inside the right circle, 13:31 into the second period. In the next period, 16:07 into the third, Portland’s Cross Hanas batted in the final goal of the game, also earning himself his first career WHL goal.

Friday, October 12
When the Swift Current Broncos hosted the Spokane Chiefs, Noah King was the only Bronco to score that night in a 4-1 defeat, recording his first career WHL goal on a two-on-one play with Max Patterson, 15:44 into the third period. While the goal was notable as his first in WHL regular season play, King had technically tallied his first goal during Game Five of the 2018 Rogers WHL Championship Series.

In their first 2018-19 Regular Season win, Calgary Hitmen’s Riley Fiddler-Shultz scored his first career WHL goal on the Lethbridge Hurricanes 7:40 into the second period on a rebound that went in and out so quickly, it prompted a review. After a conference of officials, the Hitmen were in fact awarded the Fiddler-Shultz goal, helping them to a 6-5 win over the Hurricanes.

In the first game of the home-and-home series between the Tri-City Americans and Kelowna Rockets Dallon Wilton managed a goal through a lot of traffic around the net to earn his first career WHL goal and the first goal of the game for Kelowna. Later in the game, forward Blake Stevenson recorded his first career WHL goal with a quick snap shot in front of the Rockets’ net, 9:35 into the third period.

Saturday, October 13
On Saturday night, a patient play by Tyson Upper allowed the Prince George Cougars to break the 2-2 tie against the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4:40 into the third period, while also collecting his first career WHL goal.

Playing against the Medicine Hat Tigers, Kootenay ICE’s Jakin Smallwood was left alone in the slot to capitalize on a pass from behind the net to earn his first career WHL goal 9:49 into the third.

In the second game of the home-and-home series, the Tri-City Americans struck back against the Kelowna Rockets 5-4 where rookie goal-tender Talyn Boyko played his first full 60-minute game in the WHL and also recorded his first career WHL victory, stopping 24 of 28 shots.

In a run-away game between the Everett Silvertips and Kamloops Blazers, Joona Sillanpää shot a rocket from the blue line to notch his first career WHL goal while also earning one of only two goals that night for the Kamloops Blazers.
Sunday, October 14
Cole Dubinsky was the first to capitalize for the Regina Pats when playing the Calgary Hitmen after a turnover on the blue line by the Hitmen allowed him to snipe one past the goaltender recording his first career WHL goal, 3:06 into the first period.

After pressuring the Everett Silvertips for the puck, Portland Winterhawks teammates Mason Mannek and Robbie Fromm-Delorme created a two-on-one opportunity where Fromm-Delorme angled the puck perfectly into the net to notch his first career WHL goal, 18:24 into the second period.

Tuesday, October 17
Rookie Ben King chipped in his first career WHL goal from a pass in front of the net 19.06 into the third period. King’s goal tallied the second of two goals for the Swift Current Broncos in a 6-2 loss against the Vancouver Giants.
