WHL Alumni Luke Philp earns second-consecutive Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Trophy
Western Hockey League alumni Luke Philp added another impressive honour to his hockey resumé Tuesday.
Philp, a former member of the Kootenay ICE and captain of the Red Deer Rebels, earned his second consecutive Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Trophy as the top regular season scorer in Canada West men’s hockey.
Appearing in just 24 of the University of Alberta Golden Bears’ 28 games, Philp finished with 45 points (21G-24A), including, nine power-play goals, two short-handed goals, and five game-winning goals. Overall, Philp led the conference in goals and finished second overall in assists. Teammate Cole Sanford, formerly of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Regina Pats, led the conference with 25 assists.
Philp’s 45 points were a career-best performance, topping his 40-point (11G-29A) total from last season. Twenty-five of Philp’s points came even strength while 20 came on special teams, 17 on the power play and three while short handed. On February 2, 2019, Philp recorded four assists to surpass the 100-point plateau in his Canada West career. Through 78 Canada West regular season games, Philp has 103 points (42G-61A), including 14 power-play goals and three short-handed goals.
This season alone, Philp has recorded 14 multi-point games and five multi-goal games. He had the first four-goal game of his Canada West career on January 25, adding a pair of hat-trick performances and a pair of two-goal games. Of his 14-multi-point performances, Philp had one five-point game, three four-point games, one three-point game, and nine two-point games.
A product of Canmore, Alta., Philp was originally selected in the third round, 59th overall, of the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft by the ICE. Making his debut in the 2011-12 WHL Regular Season, Philp would appear in 264 WHL regular season games with the ICE and Rebels, recording 251 points (103G-148A). He served as the Rebels’ captain at the 2016 Memorial Cup in Red Deer, Alta.
Having earned a bye to the Canada West semi-final, the Golden Bears will await their opponent in the Canada West playoffs. The Calgary Dinos, UBC Thunderbirds, Mount Royal University Cougars, and Lethbridge Pronghorns will be battling in this week’s quarter-finals. The best-of-three semifinals will take place February 22-24.
