Royals add Folk to fill overage hole
The Victoria Royals filled out their overage contingent Monday morning, acquiring 20-year-old left winger Carter Folk from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a fourth round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
“Carter is a very experienced and hard-working forward and we really like the type of game that he brings,” said Cameronn Hope, general manager of the Royals, in a team release. “We are pleased to have him join us.”
Folk, a native of Regina, joins left winger Jack Walker and defenceman Ryan Gagnon as the Royals trio of 20-year-olds.
A veteran of three WHL seasons, the 6-foot-2, 197-pound Folk scored a career-high 31 points over 66 games with the Hurricanes in 2015-16. Over 178 career regular season contests, Folk has 26 goals, 35 assists and 61 points to his name, along with 289 penalty minutes. He added one goal in three post-season outings with the Hurricanes this past season.
“It’s a hard, hard day today,” said Peter Anholt, general manager of the Hurricanes, in a team release. “The thing about Carter is he came here in a trade from Seattle for some players that didn’t want to play here and he was a big reason for the turnaround here.
“We’re sending Carter to a good organization, so that makes it a little bit easier.”
The Hurricanes were stuck in a jam when it came to overage players as, prior to Monday’s trade, they carried Folk, captain Tyler Wong, centre Ryley Lindgren and defenceman Kord Pankewicz. With the deal, the Hurricanes are now down to the WHL maximum of three overage players.
Cant thank the people and fans of the @WHLHurricanes enough! Very sad to say goodbye to everyone

Folk was a fourth round pick (84th) of the Seattle Thunderbirds at the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.
“In the dressing room, I don’t think you’re going to find a nicer kid,” Anholt said of Folk. “Anytime you’re moving a quality person like Carter, it’s hard, but you take solace in the fact of where he’s going.
“He’ll be missed. His presence on the ice and how he plays the game with that reckless abandonment and the sandpaper he brings to the game was very important for our hockey club.”
Folk incurred a major penalty and game misconduct for checking to the head during pre-season play against the Swift Current Broncos on Sept. 9. He awaits supplementary discipline from the Western Hockey League.
The Royals wrap up their 2016 pre-season schedule on Saturday, Sept. 17 (3 p.m. PDT) when they visit the Vancouver Giants at the Langley Events Centre.
Next on the docket for the Hurricanes is a Sept. 15 date (7 p.m. MDT) with the Kootenay ICE in Crowsnest Pass, Alta.
