Rebels Unveil Commemorative Jerseys
Red Deer, AB – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Red Deer Rebels Hockey Club unveiled today the specially designed commemorative jerseys to be worn by the Rebels in the opening game of the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup against the London Knights on Friday May 20.
The jerseys will be available for online auction at auction.chl.ca beginning Friday May 20 at 7:00 pm closing Monday May 30 at 7:00 pm Mountain Time.
The Theme Jersey was designed by the Red Deer Rebels in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League. The jersey pays tribute to Central Alberta’s military presence from the middle decades of the 20th Century. While Red Deer does not house a large military presence today, people are reminded of the past by visiting Springbrook, the home of the Red Deer Regional Airport, and formerly CFB Penhold. Many houses, facilities, and hangars from the base still exist today, and provide historical character for newer communities.
CFB Penhold was the military hub of Central Alberta, originally opening in 1940 as an Air Force base during WW2. It took on its “CFB” title in 1966 after unification of the forces, and was also adjacent to the “Diefenbunker”, a now defunct and demolished Regional Emergency Government Headquarters. From 1961 to 1986, the base also housed a Radar Squadron as part of NORAD. CFB Penhold was officially decommissioned in 1994.
Proceeds from the auction will go towards supporting the Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. All donation to the Poppy Fund are placed in trust to be used for the care and benevolent support of Veterans and their dependents. The MasterCard Memorial Cup Theme Jersey Program was created in 2008 and has cumulatively generated over $120,000 for Veterans.
The Memorial Cup was donated in 1919 by the Ontario Hockey Association as a memorial to those young men and women who had been given their lives in the defence of Canada during World War I. The 2016 edition of the championship in Red Deer marks the 98th time this prestigious trophy will be presented.
The 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup is proudly supported by MasterCard, title sponsor of this event for 18 straight years. Associate sponsors include BMO Bank of Montreal, Cooper Tires, autoTRADER.ca, and Bumper to Bumper.
