Rebels acquire Sexsmith from Giants
The Red Deer Rebels have acquired defenceman Joel Sexsmith and a conditional third-round selection in the 2020 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft selection in exchange for the rights to forward Brendan Budy and a conditional seventh-round selection in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft selection from the Vancouver Giants.
Sexsmith spent last season with the Canadian Sports School Hockey League’s (CSSHL) Delta Hockey Academy Prep team. In 15 games, the 6-foot-1, 176-pound blueliner registered 12 points (5G-7A). Additionally, Sexsmith dressed in five games for the Giants over the past two seasons. Originally, the Edmonton, Alta. product was drafted ninth overall by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
Budy, a Langley, B.C. native was selected by the Rebels in the fourth round, 69th overall, in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. Last season, the 5-foot-10, 179-pound winger recorded 31 points (11G-20A) in 31 games with the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Tri-City Storm.
