Pats Hire Former Captain
REGINA – The Regina Pats Hockey Club announced this afternoon the appointment of Bob Lowes as the team’s new head coach.
Lowes, a former captain with the Pats during the 1983-84 season, spent the past nine years behind the bench of the Brandon Wheat Kings where he led the club to a pair of first place and three second place finishes, three Eastern Conference titles, three trips to the WHL finals, two appearances in the Memorial Cup tournament as well as Brandon’s first President’s Cup Trophy in seventeen years. The Prince Albert native is the Wheat Kings all-time winningest coach and is one of just ten WHL coaches to have won 300 games. Lowes also served as an assistant with the Seattle Thunderbirds in 1991-92 and was coach/general manager of the Nipawin Hawks of the SJHL for two seasons, 1989-90 and 1990-91.
As a player, Lowes spent three years with the SJHL’s Prince Albert Raiders, two seasons with the Pats and another two at the University of Manitoba. During his playing days, he had the opportunity to play for such coaching greats as Bob Strumm, Wayne Fleming, and Terry Simpson.
The 38-year old Lowes replaces Lorne Molleken, who left the club in July to join the coaching staff of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks.
“We are extremely excited to have Bobby as part of our organization,” stated Pats General Manager Brent Parker. “His history of success in the league and his ties to the organization make him make an obvious choice for the position.”
Bob and his wife Shelley have three children, daughters Alycia (8) and Mikayla (6) and son Robert (5).
