Gilbert Brule – Selected 1st overall in 2002 WHL Bantam Draft – FINAL RESULTS

 

The Western Hockey League conducted the 13th Annual Bantam Draft on Thursday, May 2nd, at the Pengrowth Saddledome in the Air Canada Club and for the first time in the history of the Bantam Draft, the first overall pick was traded.

The Prince Albert Raiders traded the first overall pick to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for the third overall pick and a third round pick. The Giants then selected Gilbert Brule as the number one player taken in the 2002 WHL Bantam Draft. Brule is a centreman from North Vancouver, British Columbia. The Vancouver Giants with the second overall selection, picked up another centreman from Calgary, Alberta, Daniel Bertram. The third overall pick went to the Prince Albert Raiders and they selected Mike Gauthier, a defenceman from Vancouver, British Columbia.

The WHL Bantam Draft is a talent identification process which serves as the first opportunity for WHL teams to add players in the bantam age group, 1987 birthdates, to their respective 50 player lists. Numerous players are not selected during the Bantam Draft but develop and become WHL stars at a later date. Some examples include the 2002 WHL Player of the Year, Dan Hamhuis of the Prince George Cougars and the 2002 NHL scoring leader and former Kamloops Blazer, Jarome Iginla. Also included in this group are projected 2002 NHL Entry Draft first round selections, Scottie Upshall of the Kamloops Blazers and Joffrey Lupul of the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The breakdown of 2002 Bantam selections were as follows; a total of 192 players were chosen. 53 players came from the province of Alberta, followed by British Columbia with 51 and Saskatchewan with 46. There were 30 players selected from Manitoba and 12 players were chosen from the United States.
