Giants’ Kubic named Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Ryan Kubic of the Vancouver Giants is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending October 16 after posting a 4-0-0-0 record including a shutout victory along with a goals-against-average of 1.73 and save percentage of .944.
Kubic made 119 saves last week backstopping the Giants to four straight road victories over Alberta-based Central Division opposition. On Thanksgiving Monday in Calgary he made 30 saves as part of a 5-3 win over the Hitmen, then posted a 28-save shutout on Tuesday as first star of a 2-0 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Kubic’s week continued Friday with a 25-save effort in a 4-3 overtime triumph over the Lethbridge Hurricanes, then finished with another first star performance on Saturday stopping 36 shots in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
An 18-year-old from St. Andrews, Manitoba, Kubic is playing in his second full WHL season with the Giants who selected him in the second round of the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. He currently carries a 5-5-0-0 record with a 3.31 goals-against-average and .895 save percentage.
Also considered for the award this week was Xavier Potvin of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens who posted a 2-0-0-0 record with a goals-against-average of 0.95 and save percentage of .968, and Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael McNiven of the Owen Sound Attack who went 2-0-0-0 with a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .946.
