Edmonton Oilers sign Blades forward Hebig to entry-level contract
Saskatoon Blades forward Cameron Hebig took a step forward in realizing his NHL dream Thursday, signing a three-year entry-level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
Hebig, a 6-foot-0, 182-pound product of Saskatoon, Sask., led the Blades to their second straight victory Wednesday, scoring a pair of goals in a 4-2 win over the Prince Albert Raiders. That victory moved the Blades into the first wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. In addition to winning back-to-back games, the Blades have won five of their last six, including three one-goal victories against East Division opponents.
The 20-year-old forward has played a huge part in the Blades’ success this season, recording 51 points (28G-23A) in 34 games. Hebig leads the Blades in scoring and presently sits 11th in the WHL scoring race. He sits fifth in the league for goals with 28, seven behind the two league leaders.
Hebig started the year with points in seven of his first eight games. He also has eight multi-goal games this season, including a pair of hat tricks. Hebig currently has 10 points (5G-5A) in his last six games.
Originally drafted by the Blades in the third round, 56th overall, of the 2012 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, Hebig has played his entire WHL career with the Blades, scoring 186 points (85G-101A) in 232 WHL games. Of his 85 goals, 25 have come on the power play, four have come while short-handed and eight stood up as game-winning goals.
The Blades are back in action Thursday, December 28 (7:00 p.m. CST) when the complete a home-and-home set against the Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre.
