WHL GRAD HOLFELD NAMED ATHLETE OF WEEK
EDMONTON – Saskatchewan Huskies goaltender Ryan Holfeld is the final Canada West Athlete of the Week for the 2011-12 season.
Athlete of the Week: Ryan Holfeld, Saskatchewan
MALE: #31 Ryan Holfeld, Saskatchewan (hockey)
Second-year University of Saskatchewan goaltender Ryan Holfeld stopped 40 of 43 shots in a 4-3 win over the eventual CIS champion McGill Redmen on Saturday in the Huskies’ second game at the 50th University Cup at UNB in Fredericton.
Facing a daunting task after a 5-1 Huskies loss to Moncton the day before, the Leroy, Sask. native stepped in for his only start at 2012 Nationals and made numerous great saves, earning Player of the Game honours and handing the Redmen their only defeat at Nationals. Forward Kyle Bortis notched a goal and two assists in the victory.
Despite the result, it was McGill (+2) that took Pool B based on goal differential over Moncton (+1) and the U of S (-3), going on to claim the gold medal in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime win over Western University, the school’s first-ever CIS men’s hockey title.
