2011-12 BC HOCKEY MAJOR MIDGET LEAGUE
The 2011-2012 Major Midget League (MML) season will officially begin this weekend with Evaluation Camps being held for all 11 teams from August 5-7, 2011. Camps will be held at various locations throughout BC.
The success of the MML is at an all time high with the 2011-2012 Evaluation Camps setting a new record for the highest registration in the history of the League. Approximately 800 players will hit the ice this weekend for the opportunity to participate in BC’s premier League for 15, 16 and 17 year olds.
A defining moment for the MML was during the 2010-2011 Pacific Midget Regional Championship when the Vancouver North West Giants defeated the Red Deer Rebels (Alberta Representative). This marked the first time since the inception of the MML that the BC representative defeated the Alberta representative. The Giants proceeded to the National Midget Championship TELUS Cup, but fell just short of the championship title.
Another first for the MML was the Edmonton Oilers’ first overall selection of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Nugent-Hopkins was a member of the Vancouver North West Giants in the 2008-09 season leading the team to the MML Championship. The MML gave Nugent-Hopkins the development needed to succeed at the Major Junior level.
In addition to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the MML has produced a number of NHL players and NHL prospects. Some of these players and prospects include:
- Evander Kane (Greater Vancouver Canadians, 2006-2007 season)
- Kane will look to lead the Winnipeg Jets when they return to the NHL this season. In his two (2) previous seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers, Kane established himself as an up-and-coming NHL power forward with a prowess for scoring goals. He finished the 2010-2011 season with 19 goals and 24 assists in 73 games
- Brett Connolly (Cariboo Cougars, 2007-2008 season)
- Connolly was selected sixth overall by the Tampa Bay Lighting in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. This past season he played with the Prince George Cougars, and scored 46 goals in 59 games. Earlier this summer he signed a three-year entry level contract with Tampa Bay.
- Max Reinhart (Vancouver North West Giants, 2007-2008 season)
- During the 2010-2011 season, Reinhart helped lead the Kootenay Ice to a Western Hockey League championship. He will now look to become a key player for the Calgary Flames after recently signing a three-year entry level contract.
- Griffin Reinhart (Vancouver North West Giants, 2009-2010 season)
- Griffin, younger brother of Max, has a big year in store for him as he is considered to be a top prospect in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Most recently Reinhart was selected to the National Men’s Summer U18 Team which will compete at the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament.
