WEDNESDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
AMERICANS TOP OIL KINGS IN O/T – Matt MacKenzie scored on a power play 53 seconds into overtime to lift the Tri-City Americans to a 4-3 win over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings in Western Hockey League action on Wednesday.
Justin Feser – with a goal and an assist – Adam Hughesman and Jordan Messier also scored while Brendan Shinnimin chipped in two assists to extend his point streak to 20 games for the Americans (32-13-2-1), who win their third game in a row and now sit just one point back of Spokane for third place in the Western Conference. Chris Driedger made 23 saves in the win.
Michael St. Croix, Klarc Wilson and Dylan Wruck – with his 30th of the season – scored for the Oil Kings (24-24-1-3), who gain at least one point for a third straight game. Jon Groenheyde turned in a 42-save effort in the loss.
ROCKETS 6, BRUINS 4
Evan Bloodoff scored twice and Tyson Barrie picked up three assists to lead the Kelowna Rockets to a 6-4 win over the visiting Chilliwack Bruins on Wednesday.
Geordie Wudrick notched his 30th goal of the season while Cody Chikie, Zak Stebner and Colton Scissons also scored for the Rockets (30-20-0-0), who stretch their win streak to seven games but remain a point back of Vancouver for the B.C. Division lead. Adam Brown made 21 saves to claim his 25th win of the season.
Roman Horak – with two goals – Mike Forsyth and Kevin Sundher scored for the Bruins (21-25-2-2), who drop their fifth straight decision and remain in ninth place in the Western Conference. Lucas Gore made 32 saves in the defeat.
SILVERTIPS 3, BLAZERS 2
Tyler Maxwell scored twice in the third period to lead the visiting Everett Silvertips to a 3-2 victory over the Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday.
Ryan Murray notched a goal and an assist for the Silvertips (22-23-3-4), who earn their fourth straight win and give themselves a four-point lead over the Blazers for seventh place in the Western Conference. Kent Simpson turned aside 36 of 38 shots he faced to post his fourth straight victory.
Corey Fienage and Colin Smith scored for the Blazers (22-29-2-1), who outshot the visitors 38-20 in the contest. Jeff Bosch made 17 saves in a losing cause.
GIANTS 5, HURRICANES 4 S/O
Brendan Gallagher and Andrej Stastny scored in a shootout to lift the visiting Vancouver Giants to a 5-4 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday.
Gallagher – with a goal and three assists – Spencer Bennett, Neil Manning and Brendan Rowinski scored in regulation for the Giants (28-20-1-4), who earn their second win in as many nights on their Central Division road trip. Mark Segal made 29 saves through three periods and overtime, and wasn’t beaten in the shootout to claim the victory.
Mitch Maxwell, Reid Jackson, Brody Sutter and Mike Reddington scored for the Hurricanes (17-24-3-8), who suffer their fourth straight defeat but move to within one point of eighth place in the Eastern Conference with the shootout loss. Brandon Anderson made 26 saves in regulation, but was beaten on both Giants’ shootout attempts to take the loss.
HITMEN 3, ICE 1
Trevor Cheek scored his sixth goal of the season and Brandon Glover turned in a 32-save performance to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 3-1 win over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Wednesday.
Kris Foucault and Jimmy Bubnick each scored their 16th goals of the season for the Hitmen (16-34-2-1), who put an end to a six-game losing skid.
Matt Fraser – with his 23rd of the season – had the lone tally for the Ice (33-17-1-2), who see a three-game winning streak come to an end while suffering their first defeat to the Hitmen this season. Mackenzie Skapski made 25 saves in the loss.
BLADES 6, PATS 2
Jake Trask scored twice and set up another while Brayden Schenn chipped in four assists to lead the Saskatoon Blades to a 6-2 victory over the visiting Regina Pats on Wednesday.
Marek Viedensky, Matej Stransky, Duncan Siemens and Curtis Hamilton also scored for the Blades (40-10-0-2), who hit the 40-win mark for a third consecutive season. Steven Stanford made 29 saves in the victory.
Jordan Weal and Shayne Neigum scored for the Pats (18-26-6-1), who have dropped four of their last five outings. Matt Hewitt and Damien Ketlo combined for 36 saves in a losing cause.
REBELS 7, RAIDERS 4
Byron Froese scored a hat trick and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added a goal and three assists to lead the visiting Red Deer Rebels to a 7-4 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday.
John Persson – with a goal and two assists – Colin Archer and Adam Kambeitz also scored for the Rebels (36-13-1-4), who rebound after their 7-5 loss in Saskatoon on Tuesday that ended an 11-game win streak. Dawson Guhle made 28 saves in the win.
Igor Revenko scored three goals while Todd Fiddler notched his 14th goal of the season for the Raiders (20-28-2-3), who held a 3-1 lead after the opening period and were tied at 4-4 after two periods of play ikn the contest. Jamie Tucker made 35 saves in the defeat.
WHEAT KINGS 3, BRONCOS 2
Shayne Wiebe scored twice, including the go-ahead goal 11:32 into the third period, to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 3-2 win over the visiting Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday.
Jordan Fransoo – with his fourth of the season – also counted for the Wheat Kings (19-27-1-7), who move one point up on Lethbridge and Prince Albert for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Liam Liston made 18 stops to record his 14th win of the campaign.
Justin Dowling – with a goal and an assist – and Reece Scarlett scored for the Broncos (23-31-0-1), who see their losing skid hit seven games and now sit just one point ahead of the Wheat Kings in seventh place in the Eastern Conference. Mark Friesen made 43 saves in the loss.
