SATURDAY’S WHL ROUND-UP
PATS WORK OVERTIME TO DOWN WARRIORS – Jordan Weal scored the tying goal with 36 seconds remaining in regulation then tallied the overtime winner as the Regina Pats downed the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors in Western Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Lyndon Martell – with a goal and an assist – and Brandon Davidson also scored for the Pats (18-25-6-1), who rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat their East Division archrival and earn a split in their weekend home-and-home series. Matt Hewitt made 32 saves to notch his ninth victory of the season and help the pats close to within one point of a share of eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Sebastian Svendsen scored twice – his 20th and 21st of the season – while Brett Lyon also counted for the Warriors (31-18-1-2), who see a two-game win streak snapped and drop to fifth in the Eastern Conference. Thomas Heemskerk made 24 saves in the loss.
REBELS 5, HITMEN 3
In Red Deer, AB, Byron Froese scored three goals to lead the Red Deer Rebels to a 5-3 win over the visiting Calgary Hitmen
John Persson and Matt Dumba – with his 13th of the season – also scored while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins chipped in three assists for the Rebels (35-12-1-4), who push their winning streak to 11 games and retain their eight-point atop the Central Division standings. Darcy Kuemper made 18 saves to claim his WHL-leading 33rd win of the season.
John Lawrence scored twice and Cody Sylvester added his 17th of the season for the Hitmen (15-32-2-1), who led 2-0 after the opening period of play but allowed the next four goals en route to their fourth straight setback. Mike Snider turned in a 38-save effort in the defeat.
BLADES 3, BRONCOS 1
Brayden Schenn tallied his fourth goal of the season and added an assist to help the visiting Saskatoon Blades to a 3-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
Jake Trask also picked up a goal and an assist while Matej Stransky scored for the second straight game for the Blades (38-10-0-2), who pick up their fifth straight win to remain three points ahead of Red Deer for first place in the Eastern Conference. Steven Stanford turned in a 35-save performance to claim his 26th win of the season.
Brad Hoban scored the lone marker for the Broncos (23-30-0-1), who lose both weekend games versus Saskatoon and have dropped six straight games overall. Mark Friesen made 30 saves in the loss.
OIL KINGs 4, RAIDERS 2
Dylan Wruck scored his 26th and 27th goals of the season as the Edmonton Oil Kings doubled up the visiting Prince Albert Raiders 4-2 on Saturday.
Klarc Wilson and T.J. Foster also scored for the Oil Kings (23-24-0-3), who put an end to a six-game losing skid while moving into sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Laurent Brossoit made 36 saves in the win.
Tyler Fiddler and Justin Maylan scored for the Raiders (19-27-2-3), who held a 2-0 lead until the midway point of the second period. Jamie Tucker made 29 saves in a losing cause.
ICE 4, HURRICANES 3 O/T
Elgin Pearce scored 3:31 into overtime to lift the Kootenay Ice to a 4-3 victory over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes on Saturday.
Drew Czerwonka, Max Reinhart and James Martin also counted for the Ice (32-16-1-2), who sweep their weekend home-and-home series versus the Hurricanes and remain one point up on Medicine Hat for third place in the Eastern Conference. Mackenzie Skapski turned in a 30-save performance to record the win in his first WHL appearance.
Max Ross and Mitch Maxwell each notched a goal and an assist and Reid Jackson also scored for the Hurricanes (17-24-3-7), who rallied from a 3-0 deficit but suffer the overtime loss for their third straight setback. Brandon Anderson made 29 saves in the loss.
TIGERS 4, WHEAT KINGS 3
Wacey Hamilton scored his 15th goal of the season and added a pair of assists to lead the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 4-3 win over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.
Kale Kessy scored for a third consecutive game while Linden Vey and Cole Grbavac also scored for the Tigers (32-15-2-0), who went 2-for-3 on the man advantage in the contest as they stretch their win streak to four games. Deven Dubyk made 21 saves in the win.
Ryan Pulock, Shayen Wiebe and Mark Stone scored for Brandon (18-27-1-7), who remain tied with Lethbridge for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Corbin Boes and Liam Liston combined for 19 saves in the setback.
BLAZERS 5, BRUINS 1
Thomas Frazee and Dylan Willick each scored a pair of goals to lead the visiting Kamloops Blazers to a 5-1 triumph over the Chilliwack Bruins on Saturday night.
JT Barnett – with his 11th of the season – also scored for the Blazers (22-28-2-1), who put a five-game losing streak to rest and vault past the Bruins into eighth place in the Western Conference. Jeff Bosch made 21 stops to record his 18th win of the campaign.
Roman Horak scored his 19th of the season for the Bruins (21-24-2-2) who have lost five straight and have given up 30 goals in that span. Lucas Gore made 41 saves in a losing cause.
SILVERTIPS 4, COUGARS 2
Tyler Maxwell scored two more goals – his 32nd and 33rd of the season – to lead the Everett Silvertips past the visiting Prince George Cougars.
Clayton Cumiskey and Josh Birkholz also scored for Everett (20-23-3-4), who win back-to-back games for the first time since the final weekend before the Christmas break. Kent Simpson made 31 saves to claim his 14th win of the season.
Charles Inglis – with his 20th of the season – and Brett Connolly scored for the Cougars (24-23-2-1), who have dropped two straight and seven of their last 10 outings. Ty Rimmer made 23 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 5, CHIEFS 4
Mason Wilgosh was the hero, scoring with just 37 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the visiting Tri-City Americans to a 5-4 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday.
Brendan Shinnimin, Patrick Holland and Adam Hughesman each netted a goal and an assist while Connor Rankin scored his 12th goal of the season for the Americans (31-13-2-1), who now sit just three points back of the Chiefs for second place in the U.S. Division. Drew Owsley made 28 saves in the win.
Steve Kuhn scored three goals, giving him four goals over his last two outings, while Tyler Johnson – with his 38th of the season – also scored for Spokane (31-13-4-2), who have dropped three of their last five games. Mac Engel made 26 saves in the defeat.
ROCKETS 7, GIANTS 3
Geordie Wudrick scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Kelowna Rockets to a 7-3 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants on Saturday.
Zach Franko, Brett Bulmer and Mitchell Callahan each picked up a goal and an assist for the Rockets (29-20-0-0), who push their win streak to six games and move past the Giants into the B.C. Division lead, while Shane McColgan also scored. Adam Brown made 24 saves in the win.
Brendan Rowinski scored twice and Greg Lamoureux also counted for the Giants (26-20-1-4), who see a five-game win streak come to an end. Mark Segal made 28 stops in a losing cause.
WINTERHAWKS 5, THUNDERBIRDS 2
Ty Rattie scored his 22nd goal of the season and chipped in an assist to lead the visiting Portland Winterhawks to a 5-2 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday.
Brad Ross, Ryan Johansen and William Wrenn each notched a goal and an assist while Craig Cunningham tallied his 18th of the season for the Winterhawks (34-15-0-3), who were 1-for-5 on the power play in the contest. Mac Carruth turned aside 43 of 45 shots to record his 24th win of the season.
Travis Toomey and Marcel Noebels scored for Seattle (18-23-4-5), who have lost seven straight games and drop to 10th place in the Western Conference. Calvin Pickard made 37 saves in the setback.
