Tuesday’s WHL Round-up
BLADES BLANK REBELS – Braden Holtby turned in a 38-save performance to earn his sixth shutout and 35th win of the season as the visiting Saskatoon Blades blanked the Red Deer Rebels 3-0 in Western Hockey League action on Tuesday, February 17th.
Walker Wintoneak – with his 26th goal of the season – Curtis Hamilton and Charles Inglis scored for the Blades (43-14-3-1), who pick up their second straight win and 25th road victory of the season, while Stefan Elliott chipped in two assists. The victory keeps the Blades six points ahead of Brandon for top spot in the East Division.
Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves in a losing cause for the Rebels (19-32-1-8), who suffer their third straight loss and sixth setback in seven games. The Rebels remain in 11th place in the Eastern Conference.
WHEAT KINGS 4, BRONCOS 2
Matt Calvert scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season to pace the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings to a 4-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday.
Brayden Schenn – with a goal and an assist – and Jordan Hale also scored for the Wheat Kings (40-16-3-1), who earn their second straight victory and 40th of the season, while Mark Stone added a pair of assists. James Priestner made 25 saves to claim his 15th win of the season.
Michael Stickland and Geordie Wudrick scored for the Broncos (33-26-1-1), who suffer their second straight defeat and have lost six straight meetings with Brandon this season. Travis Yonkman made 21 saves in the loss.
AMERICANS 4, COUGARS 0
Chet Pickard made 32 saves to record his sixth shutout of the season and the 12th of his WHL career as the Tri-City Americans defeated the visiting Prince George Cougars 4-0 on Tuesday.
Mitch Fadden – with a goal and an assist – Justin Feser, Jason Reese and Taylor Procyshen scored for the Americans (40-16-0-3), who pick up their second straight victory and top the 40-win mark for the third straight season. The win moves the Ams four points ahead of Spokane for tops spot in the U.S. Division.
Kevin Armstrong turned aside 36 of 40 shots he faced in a losing cause for the Cougars (23-36-0-2), who suffer their third defeat in a row. The Cougars remain in eighth place in the Western Conference.
