GANCHAR DECIDES TO PURSUE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES
Perry Ganchar, the head coach of the Chiefs for the past two seasons, has announced that he is leaving the Spokane Chiefs and will pursue other
ropportunities within hockey. Ganchar will not return to the team following the second year of a two-year contract with the Chiefs.
“The last two seasons have been very rewarding,” Ganchar stated. “The experience and knowledge I have gained by coaching junior hockey is going to
renable me to pursue other opportunities within the game.”
Ganchar led the Chiefs to a two-year record of 68-53-18-5, including a second place finish in the WHL’s US Division this past season with 80
points.
In his first season as head coach, Ganchar was named the Head Coach of the WHL’s Western Conference All-Star squad. Spokane finished the regular season in a tie for third in the West Division after winning nine of their final ten regular season games. In the post-season, the Chiefs swept the first two rounds and appeared in the Western Conference Finals.
This past season, the Chiefs held first place for a majority of the season before finally finishing three points out of the top spot in the US
Division. The Chiefs won a five-game first round series with the Tri-City Americans, including two in overtime, before losing to the Kelowna Rockets
in the Western Conference Semi-Finals in six games. In his two seasons, Ganchar led the Chiefs to a 14-9 playoff record.
“We would like to thank Perry for his commitment to our organization the last two years and appreciate the fact that his career goals are to pursue other coaching opportunities,” Speltz said.
“I emphasize that my time here has enabled me to develop as a coach and has also afforded me a chance to work with and meet some terrific people,” Ganchar continued.
“I would like to thank Brett Sports and the Spokane Chiefs for allowing me to be a part of their sporting family and for making my time here very memorable.”
Ganchar joined the Chiefs following a 13-year professional playing career that included 42 games in the NHL. The Saskatoon, SK native played four seasons with his hometown Blades from 1979-1983, scoring 141 career goals and 308 points prior to starting his professional career. Following his playing days, Ganchar served as either Assistant Coach or Head Coach of the Cleveland Lumberjacks for five seasons.
The search for a replacement will begin immediately.
