ALBERTA’S KEVIN MARSH NAMED JANUARY
CANADA WEST HOCKEY – WHL GRADUATE OF THE MONTH
The Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League are pleased to announce that forward KEVIN MARSH of the University of Alberta Golden Bears has been named the Canada West Hockey – WHL Graduate of the Month for January, 2002.
MARSH, a 23-year-old Physical Education student from Ardrossan, Alberta, becomes the third winner of the award in the 2001-02 season, joining the November winner, Scott Rideout of the University of Calgary Dinos, and Alberta teammate Ryan Wade, who won the award in October. In the first ever tie in voting for the monthly award, the former Red Deer Rebels forward finished with 28 points, the same as University of Saskatchewan Huskies forward, Quinn Sherdahl. MARSH was declared the award winner having received four first place votes to Sherdahl’s one.
Celebrating its 13th season, the Canada West Hockey – WHL Graduate of the Month Award is presented monthly to a graduate of the Western Hockey League who is now playing on one of the eight teams in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. Each monthly winner, between October and March, receives a cheque for $500.00 from the WHL to go towards the cost of his education.
Canadian intercollegiate hockey is a quality option for players who wish to combine both hockey and education. Over 50 WHL grads were members of Canada West Hockey’s eight teams in 2000-01. CIS hockey in general, and Canada West Hockey in particular, has allowed these players to further their hockey careers as well as their education at some of Canada’s finest academic institutions. During the 2000-01 season a total of 93 former Canada West Hockey players were playing professional hockey in North America and Europe, including former University of Alberta Golden Bears defenceman Cory Cross with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings forward Stu Grimson, who played collegiate hockey with the University of Manitoba Bisons.
In his third season of eligibility, MARSH scored points in six of eight games for the Golden Bears in January, netting seven goals and adding five assists as Alberta went 6-2-0. The Golden Bears assistant captain had four multiple point games and registered multiple goal games three times. Twice he had three point games with 2-1-3 in a 5-3 win against the University of Manitoba Bisons on January 11th and 1-2-3 in a 7-0 victory versus the University of Regina Cougars on January 18th. MARSH was involved in three of the Golden Bears game winning goals during the month, scoring two and assisting on a third. His first game winner came on January 5th as he scored both goals in Alberta’s 2-0 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds at Clare Drake Arena and a week later he netted the deciding goal in a 5-3 road win against Manitoba on January 11th. His game winning assist came in the Golden Bears 7-0 victory over Regina on January 19th. MARSH ended January with a four game scoring streak as he scored 3-4-7 from January 18th to 26th.
Entering the final month of the Canada West Hockey conference schedule, MARSH was averaging more than a point per game. Despite missing six of the Golden Bears first 22 games due to injury, he had scored 13-6-19 to rank 16th in the conference scoring race and was tied for sixth in goals and second in game winning goals with three.
Other nominees for the Canada West Hockey – WHL Graduate of the Month award for January were forwards Nils Antons of the University of British Columbia (Kamloops Blazers), Chad Keltzel of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Dave Cameron of the University of Manitoba Bisons (Saskatoon Blades) and Quinn Sherdahl of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (Swift Current Broncos).
MARSH played five seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Calgary Hitmen, Kelowna Rockets and Red Deer Rebels between 1994-95 and 1998-99.
