WHEATIES DONATE MORE TO HELPING HANDS

Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, along with Peak of the Market, teamed up to donate fourteen hundred (1,400) pounds of fresh vegetables to Brandon’s Food Banks during the month of January.

Under terms of this year’s “Score Food for Hunger” program, Peak of the Market donates fifty pounds of fresh vegetables to Helping Hands, each time one of the hockey club’s Manitoba born players scores a goal or collects an assist.

With a donation of 1,400 pounds this month, a total of 6,850 pounds of fresh Manitoba grown vegetables has been donated by Peak of the Market this season. 17-year old Winnipeg product Lance Monych, one of two Wheat Kings to play in Thursday’s Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game in Saskatoon, scored four times and added five assists for nine points last month while three others including Altona’s Kevin Harris chipped in with six points each.

Harris had six assists while defenceman Travis Young of Souris and Winkler’s Eric Fehr had two goals and six points a piece. Carman’s Colin McRae, who has missed most of the past two months with back to back shoulder separations, had one goal in four games. In related news, the Wheat Kings invite their fans to check what their favorite players are up to in the kitchen.

Each week, peak of the market and the Wheat Kings will provide the “Recipe of the Week” on it’s official web site, located at www.wheatkings.com On the ice, the Wheat Kings will be hoping to gain some ground on the eastern division leading Regina Pats when they play host to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night.

Brandon currently trails the Pats by three points entering weekend play after going 1-2-1 on a recent 4-game in five night Alberta road trip. Regina visits the Keystone Centre on Tuesday night for a battle for top spot in the division. Tuesday’s game is also Rain Check Night, which means any unused ticket can be exchanged for a ticket to this game.
