KNOW YOUR FOE:
Portland got off to a strong start in Wednesday’s home game against the Prince George Cougars, but a last-second first-period goal started a flood of scoring in the Cougars’ 6-2 win at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. After Jett Lajoie’s goal at 4:25 of the first, but Reed Brown and Alex Weiermair scored to grab the lead for the Winterhawks. Carson Carels’s goal with two seconds to go in the first period tied the game, and was the first of five unanswered goals for the Cougars. Terik Parascak and Dmitri Yakutsenak each wrapped up the night with a goal and two assists in Prince George’s victory. Ondrej Stebetak has been the Winterhawks’ rock in net, leading the league with more than 800 minutes and ranking second in both wins and losses. Leads have been tough to take away from this group – they have only scored first in six of their 16 games, but have won all six of those. Portland’s -12 scoring margin in the second period ranks second-lowest in the league, but its +9 margin in the third is the WHL’s third-best.
KILLER INSTINCT:
The Wild penalty kill has climbed to the top of the WHL leaderboard at 87.9 percent, completing 30 of its last 33 kills – the club has gone eight straight games without giving up multiple power play goals.
A RUI OF SUNSHINE:
Rui Han now holds the team’s longest point streak of the season, thanks to his face-and-fire tally at the start of the third period on Sunday. He has notched points in all four games since returning from his eight-game stint on the injury list, and he is the only Wild player yet this season to notch a point in four straight games.
TOLL ROAD TO THE NET:
For the Wild, few players have been as consistent recently at setting up the offense than defenseman Josh Toll – though the quest continues for his first WHL goal, he has surpassed Mason Kraft for the most assists on the team with nine, picking up one in each game last weekend. He holds a three-game point streak of his own heading into this weekend.
