KNOW YOUR FOE:
A slow offensive start for the Giants and Tri-City Americans yielded to a late outburst en route to Tri-City’s 4-3 overtime win in Langley on Saturday – Brett Olson scored 65 seconds into the second period to put the Giants up first, but Mason Mykichuk tied it for the Ams going to the third, and Crew Martinson’s goal six minutes in gave the Americans their first lead of the night. Tyus Sparks and Ryan Lin potted goals, putting Vancouver in front again with under five minutes to play. Jakub Vanecek scored with the extra attacker and 51 seconds to play, evening the game up once more, before Savin Virk’s goal 27 seconds into the overtime session gave Tri-City the win. Jakob Oreskovic had two assists for Vancouver in the loss, and Burke Hood made 37 saves. Though the Giants sit just one spot above Wenatchee in the Western Conference standings, they do feature a high-end scorer in third-round Dallas Stars draftee Cameron Schmidt – Lin leads the league’s defensemen in scoring, but is out of the lineup this week to play in the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge in Alberta.
HOME SWEET HOME:
Being home for the holidays may be just what the doctor ordered as Wenatchee looks to gain a foothold in its climb up the standings – the Wild have won four of five at home, with three of those wins against teams that were leading their divisions at the time. The home team has won all nine matchups between Wenatchee and Vancouver since the Winnipeg ICE relocated to Wenatchee in the summer of 2023.
THAT’S THE BEST SO FAR:
In Saturday’s game at Kamloops, two Wenatchee players extended their point streaks to a team-best four games – Maddix McCagherty and Luka Shcherbyna each continued their streaks with assists in that game.
POWER SURGE:
Dawson Seitz now has company at the top of Wenatchee’s power play leaderboard thanks to Blake Vanek’s three power play goals in November, including two on November 16 at Portland – Vanek’s first goal came November 7, and he now has multi-point games in three of his seven games since. His last three goals are all power play goals, and four of Wenatchee’s last six power play markers belong to either Seitz or Vanek.
“TOBY” TAKES ON THE CHALLENGE:
Tobias Tvrznik has been nothing if not consistent for Wenatchee in net, regardless of the outcome – his .917 save percentage ranks fourth in the WHL, and his 3.07 goals-against average is among the league’s top 15 despite facing more shots than all goaltenders above him other than Prince George’s Joshua Ravensbergen. His save percentage has been at or above .900 in 11 of his 14 appearances this season, and his last six in a row.
