IN A NUTSHELL:
Wenatchee welcomes the WHL’s top team as the Teddy Bear Toss returns to Town Toyota Center.
THE SCENE-SETTER:
Aiden Grossklaus answered an early goal Saturday at the Tri-City Americans, but Tri-City posted the game’s final three goals to nab a 4-1 win against the Wild, climbing back above .500 for the season and denying the Wild their first three-game win streak in two years. Gavin Garland grabbed the puck at the side of the net and slipped it to Savin Virk for a tap-in on the doorstep just 16 seconds in, but Grossklaus turned and whipped the puck past Xavier Wendt from the edge of the slot just 98 seconds off the jump to tie the contest. After that, Wenatchee was shut out of the festivities – Garland scored a backdoor one-timer at the 8:06 mark off a pass from Virk for a 2-1 lead, and Connor Dale punched in a back-side rebound with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the second period to push the lead to two. The Ams built the lead to three on a second-chance marker on the power play 20 minutes later from Dylan LeBret. Tobias Tvrznik made 20 saves, allowing more than two goals for the first time since November 22, while Xavier Wendt stopped 22 shots to earn his 10th win of the season. The two penalty-killing units combined to finish 5-for-6 on the night and 14-for-15 against each other for the weekend.
KNOW YOUR FOE:
Everett hammered out another come-from-behind victory Saturday against the Spokane Chiefs, trailing 4-2 halfway through before surging for a 6-4 victory. The Silvertips peppered the Spokane net with 61 shots, and trailed 3-1 after one period. Rhys Jamieson and Brody Gillespie traded goals 11 seconds apart in the opening 94 seconds of the second, but Matias Vanhanen scored 11 minutes into the period to cut the Spokane advantage to 4-3. Brek Liske scored on back-to-back shifts at 13:43 and 15:19 to grab the lead, and Julius Miettinen scored into the empty Chiefs net with 26 seconds to play, picking up his second goal of the night to close the festivities. Miettinen and Vanhanen finished with four points apiece, while Liske tacked an assist on to his two goals. Anders Miller shut out the Chiefs over the final 38 minutes in relief, earning the win with 18 saves. The ‘Tips are far and away the league’s number-one team, with Vanhanen and Miettinen among the league’s top six scorers, while Miller and Raiden LeGall represent the WHL’s top goaltending tandem. Everett has four wins when trailing going to the third, and is the league’s only team with a winning record when going into the final period with a deficit.
TAIT AT THE TOP:
Boston Tait earned the club’s first weekly award this past week, as the WHL’s Sandman Rookie of the Week – Tait picked up four points over a four-game stretch, with his first WHL goal in Calgary alongside three assists. Last Sunday’s two-point game was his second multi-point outing of the season, and he picked up Wenatchee’s first weekly honor since Evan Friesen was named the WHL’s Player of the Week this past January 6.
THE FRIENDLY CONFINES:
The Wild return to home ice this afternoon for their final home game before the Christmas break, and a building that teams across the WHL have been happy to avoid of late – Wenatchee is 9-5-1-0 on the season at home, and has won eight of its last 10 inside Town Toyota Center. Three of the teams to fall were leading their divisions on game night.
THAT’S “SHER”LY A BIG MILESTONE:
Luka Shcherbyna played his 150th Western Hockey League game on Friday, and is set to play his 150th game for the Wild upon appearing in the lineup this evening. 468 players have suited up for the Wild and ICE since 1996, with fewer than one in five reaching 150 games with the club.
WE’RE “SLO” PROUD OF YOU:
Michal Capos is set to depart for Minnesota to take part in Slovakia’s final camp ahead of the World Junior Championships in the Twin Cities. Capos is one of 28 players invited to the camp, with the final three roster cuts set to be made before the start of the tournament on December 26.
